Validity is a property of well formed formula formulae , statement s and Argument logic arguments . A logically valid argument is one where the conclusion follows from the premises. An invalid argument is where the conclusion does not follow from the premises. A deductive argument may be valid but not soundness sound . In other words, validity is a necessary condition for truth of a deductive syllogism but is not a sufficient condition. Valid formula Main Well formed formula A formula of a formal language is a valid formula if and only if it is true under every possible interpretation of the language. Validity of arguments An Argument logic argument is valid if and only if the truth of its premises entailment entails the truth of its conclusion. multiple issues context October 2010 unreferenced October 2010 Convergent validity , is the degree to which an operation is similar to converges on other operations that it theoretically should also be similar to. For instance, to show the convergent validity of a test of mathematics skills, the scores on the test can be correlated with scores on other tests that are also designed to measure basic mathematics ability. High correlations between the test scores would be evidence of a convergent validity. Convergent validity shows that the assessment is related to what it should theoretically be related to. It is ideal that scales rate high in discriminant validity as well, which unlike convergent validity is designed to measure the extent to which a given scale differs from other scales designed to measure a different conceptual variable. Discriminant validity and convergent validity are the two good ways to measure construct validity. Concurrent validity is a parameter used in sociology, psychology, and other psychometric or behavioral sciences. Concurrent validity is demonstrated where a test correlates well with a measure that has previously been Validity statistics validated . The two measures may be for the same construct, or for different, but presumably related, constructs. The two measures are taken at the same time. This is in contrast to predictive validity , where one measure occurs earlier and is meant to predict some later measure. ref McIntire, S.A. and Miller, L.A., Foundations of Psychological Testing,2nd Edition, Sage Publishing Co., 2005. ref Concurrent validity and predictive validity are two types of criterion related validity. The difference between concurrent validity and predictive validity rests solely on the time at which the two measures are administered. Concurrent validity applies to validation studies in which the two measures are administered at approximately the same time. For example, an employment test may be administered to a group of workers and then the test scores can be correlated with the ratings of the workers supervisors taken on the same day or in the same week. The resulting correlation would be a concurrent validity coefficient. Predictive validity differs only in that the time between taking the test and gathering supervisor ratings is longer, i.e., several months or years. In the example above, predictive validity would be the best choice for validating an employment test, because employment tests are designed to predict performance. Face validity is a property of a test intended to measure something. It is the validity of a test at face value . Some people use the term face validity only to refer to the validity of observers who are not expert in testing methodologies. For instance, if you have a test that is designed to measure whether children are good spellers, and you ask their parents whether the test is a good test, you are studying the face validity of the test. Discriminant validity describes the degree to which the operationalization is not similar to diverges from other operationalizations that it theoretically should not be similar to. Campbell and Fiske 1959 introduced the concept of discriminant validity within their discussion on evaluating test validity. They stressed the importance of using both discriminant and wikt convergent convergent validation techniques when assessing new tests. A successful evaluation of discriminant validity shows that a test of a concept is not highly correlated with other tests designed to measure theoretically different concepts. In showing that two scales do not correlate, it is necessary to correct for attenuation in the correlation due to measurement error. It is possible to calculate the extent to which the two scales overlap by using the following formula where math r xy math is correlation between x and y, math r xx math is the reliability of x, and math r yy math is the reliability of y math cfrac r xy sqrt r xx cdot r yy math Although there is no standard value for discriminant validity, a result less than .85 tells us that discriminant validity likely exists between the two scales. A result greater than .85, however, tells us that the two constructs overlap greatly and they are likely measuring the same thing. Therefore, we cannot claim discriminant validity between them. Context date September 2009 Representation validity is concerned about how well the constructs or abstraction s translate into observable measures. There are two primary questions to be answered Do the sub constructs properly define the construct if you break up the main abstractions into smaller abstractions or definitions ? Do the observation s properly interpret, measure, or test the constructs? One way to argue positively, albeit a very weak argument, is to claim face validity for the construct observable relationship. Basically this is making the following claim on the face of it, it seems like a good translation. The weakness of this argument can be strengthened by a consensus of experts. Another way to argue positively is to claim content validity for the construct observable relationship. To do this one must check the operationalization against the relevant content domain for the construct to extent to which the tests i.e., the observable measures measure the content of the subject being tested i.e., that all the important content areas are covered adequately. Expert subject Philosophy date February 2009 Pragmatic validity in research looks to a different paradigm s than more traditional, post positivistic research approaches. It tries to ameliorate problems associated with the rigour relevance debate, and is applicable in all kinds of research streams. Simply put, pragmatic validity looks at research from a prescriptive driven perspective. Solutions to problems that actually occur in the complex and highly multivariate field of practice are developed in a way that, while valid for a specific situation, need to be adjusted according to the context in which they are to be applied. The term validity is often seen as a sort catch all for the question whether the knowledge claims resulting from research are warranted. The confusion might arise from the mingling of the terms internal validity and external validity , where the former refers to proof of a causal link between a treatment and effect, and the latter is concerned with generalizability. for ecological validity as a type of experimental validity ecological validity The ecological validity of a sensory cue in perception is the correlation between the cue something an organism might be able to measure from the proximal stimulus and a property of the world some aspect of the distal stimulus . For example, the color of a banana is a cue that indicates whether the banana is ripe. This particular cue has an ecological validity close to 1, because a banana s ripeness is highly correlated with its color. By contrast, the presence of a sticker on the banana is a cue with an ecological validity close to 0, if as seems likely ripe and unripe bananas in a fruit bowl, say are equally likely to have stickers on them. The concept of ecological validity is closely related to likelihood in Bayesian inference Bayesian statistical inference and to cue validity in statistics . History of terminology Egon Brunswik defined the term ecological validity in the 1940 s to describe a cue s informativeness. His students have written that the now common use of ecological validity to describe a type of experimental validity was a corruption of his original terminology see external link to paper by Hammond . Brunswik used the words representative design to describe what is now usually called the external validity of an experiment this in turn depends partly on what is now usually called the ecological validity of the experiment. The Colonial Laws Validity Act 1865 is an Act of Parliament Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom 28 & 29 Vict. c. 63 . Its long title is An Act to remove Doubts as to the Validity of Colonial Laws . The purpose of the Act was to remove any apparent inconsistency between local colonial and British imperial legislation. Thus it confirmed that colonial legislation provided it had been passed in the proper manner was to have full effect within the colony, limited only to the extent that it was in contradiction with repugnant to any Act of Parliament that contained powers which extended beyond the boundaries of England to include that colony. This had the effect of strengthening the position of colonial legislatures, while at the same time restating their ultimate subordination to the Palace of Westminster Westminster Parliament. Until the passage of the Act, a number of colonial statutes had been struck down by local judges on the grounds of repugnancy to English laws whether or not those English laws had been intended by Parliament to be effective in the colony .
