  1. Single-tension

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Wikify date December 2009 Single tension is one of several ways to apply the necessary tension to drum heads. Single tension systems largely replaced the ancient rope tension methods in the late 19th Century and are still used today in lower priced drums for student use. In this system, one long tension rod with a threaded end extends through the hoop holding the top drum head and then down outside the drum shell to a threaded hole in the bottom hoop. There usually is a small guide halfway down on single tension drum shells to keep the tension rods straight. In older drums, the hoops are often held tight by separate clamps through which the threaded tension rod fits. Tension is applied by turning a special key that fits into a hexagonal drive, but many bass drums especially those models designed for concert use have permanent wing nuts permanently affixed to each tension rod, even on double tension drums. distinguish Tensiometer Tensometer Extensometer unreferenced date November 2008 A tension meter is a device used to measure tension in wires, cables, textiles, belts and more. Meters commonly use a 3 roller system where the material travels through the rollers causing deflection in the center roller that is connected to an analog indicator or load cell on digital models. Single roll tension sensors and sonic tension meters are other types of tensionmeters. Tension meters are available as handheld device or as an equipment for fixed installation. 1. Double-tension

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Double tension is a method of applying tension to drum heads. Drum manufacturers use several methods to apply tension to drum heads the preferred way is to tighten the heads with a hoop that is held tight to the drum shell with a number of individual threaded rods which connect to stanchion s mounted with bolts onto the outside of the drum shell. When there are individual stanchions for both the lower head and the upper struck head, or when there is one common center mounted stanchion that accepts the threaded rods from both the upper and lower drum heads, that is said to be a double tension drum. 1. Rope-tension

Rope tension is the oldest system for applying tension to drum heads and was common until the late 19th Century. A long rope or less commonly, a series of ropes is passed alternately between the top and bottom drum head hoops that are held to the shell by clamps which incorporate holes for the rope s . The ropes are tightened by sewn together loops, usually of leather, which are slid downward to tighten the drum heads and which remain in position by surface tension against the rope. The drum heads thus tightened are not as tense as with the more modern single tension or double tension systems, but offer a historically deep tone in keeping with the heritage of certain music, such as pipe and drum corps, fife and drum corps, or bands of the American Civil War Civil War era. 1. Tension grid

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 A tension grid is a type of non standard Catwalk theater catwalk though it does not meet the structural standards of a traditional catwalk. It is composed of a tightly stretched grid of steel cables that create a taut floor that is strong enough for technicians to walk on. Benefits Lighting instruments can be hung on a pipe grid just above the tension grid there is no need for holes, as the Stage lighting instrument light can shine through the grid, virtually unobstructed, to the stage. Cables and electrical wires can pass through, and special fixtures may be used to allow beams and other solid material to pass through. This style of catwalk is popular in new and remodeled theatres due to the flexibility it provides. Use of a tension grid does not require working off of edges as a traditional catwalk does, as lights are over the walking surface, not next to it. As a result, many consider tension grids safer in terms of risk of falling. Costs Tension grids require regular inspection. Lights shining through the tension grid light up a section of the grid itself, which some audience members find distracting. The cables of the grid absorb and redirect some of the light from a fixture, leading to a negligible loss in total light output. Working on a tension grid takes time to get used to because of the bouncing nature from walking across the surface. This motion coupled with the illusion of no floor at times makes it disconcerting to some. 1. Tension and release

Tension and Release is an often used term for analyzing music, to describe how music keeps the interest of a listener. In Western tonal music, ranging from European classical music to modern pop, tension is often thought to derive from the dominant chord . Release is said to occur when the music then reaches the Tonic music tonic chord or one chord based from the first scale degree of the key. In atonal music or improvised music, such as free jazz or jam band music, harmonic progressions are not necessarily recognizable, but audiences still often perceive suspense and resolution, closely related to the concepts of tension and release, respectively. Seen in terms of its Phenomenology philosophy phenomenology for the musician performing an improvisation , this experience can be attributed to different temporal relationships between a musician s cognitive perception of the notes played and the physical sounds from the instrument. If the musician is internally choosing the notes to be played a moment before each note is actually played, this tends to involve an active assertion of the will on the course of musical choices and will often be perceived as a kind of tension. By contrast, if a musician takes a less active role in choosing new notes, but simply repeats the same pattern while effectively only listening to the sounds after they are played, this can create a sensation of release. Ben Vigoda of the band The Mustn t Grumble has called these two states make it and let it, respectively. References reflist Category Musical analysis ...   more details

  1. Dynamic tension

Dynamic Tension is the name Charles Atlas gave to the system of exercises that he first popularized in the 1920s. Dynamic Tension is a self resistance exercise method which pits muscle against muscle. The practitioner tenses the muscles of given body part and then moves the body part against the tension as if a heavy weight was being lifted. However, Dynamic Tension exercises are not merely isometric exercise isometrics , since they call for movement. Instead, the method comprises a combination of exercises in three disciplines isotonic , isokinetic , and some exercises in the isometric discipline. Proponents assert that it is nearly impossible to be injured during exercise using this method because one s own muscles provide the force and, as they tire, so the force used also decreases. Likewise, the benefits can continue beyond the more traditional exercise methods because as the practitioner grows stronger, the exercise becomes more intense. Dynamic Tension is a registered trademark of Charles Atlas, Ltd. History After being bullied as a child, Charles Atlas joined the YMCA and began to do numerous exercise routines. Deleted image removed Image Steel1.jpg frame sample steel structures Tension members are structural elements that are subjected to axial tensile force s. They are usually used in different types of structures. Examples of tension members are bracing for buildings and bridges, truss members, and cables in suspended roof systems. In an axially loaded tension member, the stress is given by F P A where P is the magnitude 10 Hati of the load and A is the cross sectional area. The stress given by this equation is exact, knowing that the cross section is not adjacent to the point of application of the load nor having holes for bolts or other discontinuity. For example, if you are given a 8 x 11.5 plate is used as a tension member section a a and it is connected to a gusset plate with two 7 8 inch diameter bolts section b b . 1. Tension (geology)

Wikify date November 2010 File Tens.tif right Diagram of Geologic Tension In geology , the term tension refers to a stress which stretches rocks in two opposite directions. The rocks become longer in a lateral direction and thinner in a vertical direction. One important result of tensile stress is jointing in rocks. However, tensile stress is rare because most subsurface stress is compressive, due to the weight of the overburden. Jointing Tensile stress forms joints in rocks. A joint geology joint is a fracture that forms within a rock, whose movement to open the fracture is greater than the lateral movement that takes place. Joints are formed in the direction perpendicular to the least principal stress, meaning that they are formed perpendicular to the tensile stress. ref Chrowder, Thomas and Rollin D. Salisbury Chamberlin. Geology Geologic Processes and their results. 2nd ed. New York Henry Holt and Company, 1909. Print. ref One way in particular that joints can be formed is due to fluid pressure, as well as at the crest of folds in rocks. This occurs at the peak of the fold or due to the fluid pressure because a localized tensile stress forms, eventually leading to jointing. ref Secor, Donald. Role of Fluid Pressure in Jointing . Columbia, South Carolina University of South Carolina, Columbia, 1965. eBook. ref Another way in which joints form, are due to the change in the weight of the overburden. Since rocks lay under a great deal of overburden they undergo high temperatures and high pressures. Over time, the rocks are eroded and the weight of the overburden is lifted, so the rocks cool and are under less pressure, which causes the rock to change shape often forming breaks. As the compression is lifted from the rocks, they are able to react to the tension on them by forming these breaks, or joints. Divergent Boundaries Geologic tension is also found in the tectonic ... 1. Sexual tension

Unreferenced date September 2007 Sexual tension is a social phenomenon that occurs when two people interact and one or both feel sexual desire , but the consummation is postponed or never happens. It can occur in different social situations. One common scenario is where the two individuals function in close proximity, such as co workers or in a group of friends, but do not have sex to avoid awkwardness. Another common scenario is when two people s attraction is limited to physical, whereas any emotional attraction may be non existent. It can also occur when two individuals have previously had sexual relations and still feel an attraction towards each other, but do not wish to have sex again for fear of its effect on their current social situation such as maintaining a relationship with a different partner . It can also be felt in situations when two individuals have a relation devoid of physical contacts as in a long distance relationship. It is a common feature of plot and characterization in works of fiction . This longing is often suggested by incidents of intimacy for instance, when two people or characters are alone, are physically close, but desire is never explicitly expressed. Another common theme is for characters to develop an interest in one another over the course of the plot.
