  1. Taut foliation

In mathematics , a taut foliation is a codimension 1 foliation of a 3 manifold with the property that there is a single transverse circle intersecting every leaf. By transverse circle, is meant a closed loop that is always transverse to the tangent field of the foliation. Equivalently, by a result of Dennis Sullivan , a codimension 1 foliation is taut if there exists a Riemannian metric that makes each leaf a minimal surface . Taut foliations were brought to prominence by the work of William Thurston and David Gabai . It is closely related to the concept of Reebless foliation . A taut foliation cannot have a Reeb component , since the component would act like a dead end from which a transverse curve could never escape consequently, the boundary torus of the Reeb component has no transverse circle puncturing it. A Reebless foliation can fail to be taut but the only leaves of the foliation with no puncturing transverse circle must be compact, and in particular, homeomorphic to a torus. The existence of a taut foliation implies various useful properties about a closed 3 manifold. For example, a closed, orientable 3 manifold, which admits a taut foliation with no sphere leaf, must be irreducible mathematics irreducible , covered by math mathbb R 3 math , and have negatively curved group negatively curved fundamental group . It is useful when the length of a line will need to be periodically adjusted in order to maintain tension. It is made by tying a rolling hitch around the standing part after passing around an anchor object. Tension is maintained by sliding the hitch to adjust size of the loop, thus changing the effective length of the standing part without retying the knot. 1. Jamming knot

multiple issues unref April 2011 wikify April 2011 As a type of List of binding knots binding knot , the Jamming Knot is good for constricting a bundle of objects such as sticks or brush. It is basically a taut line hitch but the initial two wraps are on the outside of the working line rather than on the inside, and finished off with one wrap on the inside. Thus the knot holds tension towards the inside of the loop rather than the standing end of the rope as with the taut line turning a tension knot into a constricting knot. After the knot is tied, the knot is held with one hand, the standing end is pulled tight, and the knot should hold fast. This knot, as with the taut line, can be difficult or impossible to tie on slick or particularly stiff rope. References The author of this article found this knot on E How. 1. Lion's roar (instrument)

Unreferenced date January 2008 The lion s roar is a membranophone instrument that has a drum head and a cord or horsehair passing through it. The home made lion s roar is a drum that sits on the floor. The cord then makes friction with the drumhead as it is moved back and forth. It makes a noise effect like lion roaring. Classification According to the Hornbostel Sachs classification system of musical instruments it is a membranophone , because it produces sound by way of a stretched membrane. It can also be classified as a friction drum . Form The lion s roar consists of a cylindrical or bucket shaped vessel with one end open and the other closed with a membrane. A length of cord or gut is fastened through a hole in the centre of the membrane the cord is resined and rubbed with coarse fabric or a glove, producing a passable imitation of a lion s roar. In the past this was always a two handed operation one hand held the cord taut, the other gripped and slid up the cord, but in the late 20th century Kolberg produced a mounted model, with the cord held taut, requiring only one hand. In another version of the instrument, the end of the string is loosely secured to a wooden handle to form a whirled friction drum. Category Percussion instruments bg ...   more details

Kakko drums are usually laid on their sides on stands so that it can be played with sticks called bachi on both heads. Kakko drums have been used in taiko ensembles, but they are also used in older Japanese court music called gagaku .
