  1. Tally (voting)

Expert verify date January 2008 refimprove date January 2008 voting A tally also see tally sticks is an unofficial private observation of an election count carried out under Proportional Representation using the Single Transferable Vote . Tallymen , predominantly a feature of the Irish electoral process, are appointed by political candidates and parties. They observe the opening of ballot boxes and watch as the individual ballot papers are counted. Individual tallymen may be placed to observe the opening of each box and watch as separate bundles of ballot papers are sorted, stacked and counted. They record their estimation of counts by marking votes for each candidate on their tally sheet as a tick which are then assembled together to produce a full prediction of what the likely outcome of the result will be. Many political parties, having been rival during elections, co operate in producing a tally. Tally results are then released to the media before a formal account may even have begun, allowing predictions as to how some, or in most cases all, the seats in multi member constituencies, may go hours in advance of the official count, by noting how many number 1 s a candidate may get, who gets their number 2 s, whether voters vote for one party or spread their first, second, third, fourth etc preferences randomly, by party, by alphabet, by local area, or by some other criteria. 1. Winding sticks

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date February 2009 Wikify date December 2009 Image Winding sticks.jpg thumb 300px right Winding sticks in use. Winding sticks are used in woodworking to help in flattening boards, usually when the task is undertaken with a hand plane . Winding sticks are basically two short lengths of timber or some other flat and stable material. Any pieces of timber of a suitable size and straightness may be used, although many woodworkers will make one or more matching pairs for the purpose. Contrasting woods are often used to improve the ability to discern differences in height and level between the two sticks. The sticks are used in pairs, with one stick placed flat and perpendicular to the length of the board at each end. The woodworker then sights across the top of the two sticks. If the surface on which the sticks are sitting is flat, the edges of the two sticks will line up perfectly with each other, if not, the discrepancy will indicate any warping or high spots that may exist. The process is often repeated by moving the sticks to different positions along the length of the board to check the full length of the board. Adjustments to the surface of the board are made with a hand plane or other method of wood removal and the process described above is repeated until the board is satisfactorily flat. 1. Red Sticks

for the Central Asian paramilitary group Red Sticks Central Asia Red Sticks is the English term for a traditionalist faction of Creek people Creek Indians who led a resistance movement which culminated in the outbreak of the Creek War in 1813. The term red sticks is derived from the red colored war clubs and the alleged magical red sticks used by Creek shaman s. This faction of Creeks aggressively supported traditional views of Creek society such as hunting and communal land. Inspired by the Shawnee leader Tecumseh and angered by the unrestrained encroachment of white culture, Red Sticks went to war against their own pro European Creeks. The Red Sticks came primarily from the Upper Towns of Creek Territory and opposed white acculturation. The Red Stick War, more commonly called the Creek War, raged from 1813 1814. During the war, Redsticks would lash out at symbols of white influence. They would kill domesticated animals , break farming equipment, and burn crops. Metal pots and pans as well as spun cloth would be routinely gathered and destroyed. ref Robert J. Unreferenced date December 2009 In a television studio, a tally light is a small signal lamp on a television camera or video monitor monitor . It is usually located just above the lens or on the so called viewfinder and indicates, for the benefit of those being filmed as well as the cameraman, that the camera is live i.e. its signal is being used for the main program at that moment. Tally also known as the on air indication lights are typically red, although some cameras and video switchers accept a preview tally signal, which is typically green. In addition to the tally lights, an additional light called ISO is sometimes used. ISO is the abbreviation for isolated , and indicates that the video signal is isolated and recorded separately. When the camera s signal isn t used for the main program, but is being recorded for later editing, a yellow light indicates to the cameraman that his content might be used at a later stage. So, while he isn t on air, he should try to prevent making sudden moves etc. The ISO content is typically used for shots such as people s reactions when it s uncertain if, when, and how they will react. For television productions with more than one camera, the tally lights are generally illuminated automatically by a vision mixer switcher or video router .
