Multiple issues unreferenced March 2008 context October 2009 A Breton plotter , also known as a Portland Course Plotter , is a navigational instrument used for nautical navigation with Nautical chart charts . It is a ruler with a rotating rose that enables to plot a course on charts, while aligning the North of the ruler with the North of the chart. The Breton Plotter was invented by Captain Yvonnick Gueret , a Breton seaman who developed the plotter during his experiences teaching navigation. He was a commander in merchant vessels, served on small fishing boats, delivered private yachts and taught navigation. He later extended the use of the plotter to air navigation for small aircraft. File Calcomp 565 drum plotter.jpg thumb A Calcomp 565 drum plotter. The Calcomp 560 drum plotter , introduced in 1959, was one of the first computer graphics output devices sold. The computer could control in 0.01 inch increments the rotation of an 11 inch 280 mm wide drum and the horizontal movement of a pen holder over the drum. A solenoid could press the pen against paper scrolling across the drum. This arrangement allowed line drawings to be made under computer control. A version with a wider drum was also available. IBM sold the Calcomp 565 as the IBM 1627 for use with the IBM 1620 , and, later, the IBM 1130 computers. It became perhaps the first non IBM peripheral that IBM allowed to be attached to one of its computers. Unreferenced date December 2009 An X Y plotter is a plotter that operates in two axes of motion X and Y in order to draw continuous vector graphics. The term was used to differentiate it from standard plotters which had control only of the y axis, the x axis being continuously fed to provide a plot of some variable with time. Plotters differ from Inkjet and Laser printer s in that a plotter draws a continuous line, much like a pen on paper, while inkjet and laser printers use a very fine matrix of dots to form images, such that while a line may appear continuous to the naked eye, it in fact is a discrete set of points. Unreferenced date January 2007 The HP 7470 was a small low cost desktop pen plotter introduced by Hewlett Packard s San Diego division. It used a revolutionary grit wheel design which moved the paper held in place by a wheel with embedded grit and a pinch roller. The HP 7470 had only two pens, one on either side. It was much less expensive than the previous flatbed design, which was very heavy but had 4 pens. The HP 7475 used a rotating carousel with six pens. That plotter was used in greeting card kiosks. This design was also scaled up for very large pen plotters. These were driven by the HP GL plotter language which used ASCII commands such as PA 300, 4500 PD Pen plotters became obsolete with the adoption of ink jet printer s, and processors fast enough to rasterisation rasterize complex images. Houston Instrument and other manufacturers would follow with similar plotters. DEFAULTSORT Hp 7470 Category Graphics hardware Category Hewlett Packard products 7470 ... more details
