  1. The Occident and American Jewish Advocate

The Occident 1843 1869 , was the first general Jew ish periodical published in the United States . The only earlier periodical, Solomon Henry Jackson s The Jew was published as an anti missionary journal . Compiled by Rabbi Isaac Leeser from inception through 1868 , in 1869 the publication was edited by Mayer Sulzberger. Sulzberger, a successful attorney was a disciple of Leeser s in his youth. Leeser hoped Sulzberger would enter the rabbinate, but Sulzberger chose a career in law instead, but pledged to Leeser that he would edit the Occident for a year, which he fulfilled after Leeser s death. A monthly publication, the Occident did print weekly from April 1859 March 1861 until returning back to the monthly format. It contained a broad array of contents, including sermons, obituaries, juvenile literature, scholarly research, theology, spiritual poetry, domestic and foreign news of Jewish interest, resolutions adopted by congregations and organizations, book reviews and correspondence. The Occident is one of the most important records of American Jewish life in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. 1. History of the Arabs (book)

Other uses History of the Arabs disambiguation History of the Arabs is a book written by Philip Khuri Hitti and was first published in 1937. Hitti spent 10 years writing this book ref http www.saudiaramcoworld.com issue 197104 a.talk.with.philip.hitti.htm A Talk With Philip Hitti ref In 1927, the editor Macmillan Publishers Daniel Macmillan , the brother of Harold Macmillan , wrote to Philip Hitti asking him to write a history of the Arab s. Hitti agreed, estimating that it would take him three years to complete the book, but the task actually took him 10 years. Although its editor originally hesitated to publish a hundred copies of this book, the book has gone through ten published editions since then. In his History of the Arabs , Philip Hitti denies the idea of an Arab army destroyed by Charles Martel , stressing that the caliph had just died and that these Arabs preferred Spain to more northerly areas. For him, it is not the defeat of the Arabs which enabled the possibility of the Western world Occident , as if the Arabs had to be defeated so that the Occident could exist. Instead, it is the transmission of the knowledge of the Mediterranean basin and beyond, and thus the dialogue between the two banks of the Mediterranean, which enabled the foundation of the Occident.
