Orphan date February 2009 Cleanup reorganize date October 2008 Midwifery in Maya peoples Maya society is a women s profession that assists women from pregnancy to newborn care. Midwifery also has the religious role of interpreting spiritual signs and predicting children s futures. Midwives are believed in Mayan society to be assigned their profession from God through signs and visions. Mayan Midwives Childbirth is the final rite of passage amongst the Maya that completes a girl s transition to womanhood. As Guatemala is a developing country, and high rates of poverty exist in many areas, women experience high rates of mortality. Midwives in Mayan societies are responsible for the ajtuj pregnant woman and her unborn child throughout the pregnancy as well as the week of bed rest following the birth. The International Confederation of Midwives ICM supports, represents and works to strengthen professional associations of midwives on a global basis. At present ICM has 99 Member Associations in 88 countries. The ICM works with midwives and midwifery associations globally to secure women s rights and access to midwifery care before, during and after childbirth. We have worked alongside UN agencies and other partners for decades in global initiatives to help reduce the numbers of mothers and babies who die in and around childbirth, and evidence is growing that shows expanding midwifery care is one of the best ways to combat maternal mortality. St. Elizabeth s Hospital, Hyderabad , is a 75 bed health care facility established in Pakistan in 1958. It serves the people of Hyderabad and the lower areas of Sindh province. Not only is it a hospital but a facility for training nurses and midwives to guarantee the future for Pakistani women and babies. In 2008, 53 women were enrolled in the 18 month program of studies. The School is registered with the Sindh Board of Midwifery. In spite of the disadvantaged background of most of the young women who enroll, students from St Elizabeth s School of Midwifery consistently obtain some of the top three places in the annual Sindh Board of Midwifery examinations. ref http columban.org.au publications the far east 2008 april future looks bright The Far East March 2008 ref The midwifery program at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Hyderabad aims both at benefiting the poor and improving the country s health care system.
