Orphan date May 2010 Refimprove date May 2007 In software engineering , syntactic methods are techniques for developing correct software Computer program programs . The techniques attempt to detect, and thus prevent, certain kinds of defects computer bug bugs by examining the structure of the code being produced at its syntactic rather than semantic level. Usage Syntactic methods are often used when formal methods are not an option, and are often a simpler and, more importantly, cheaper alternative. In non mission critical systems, formal methods may prove to be too expensive for the benefit they provide. The costs of modelling, personnel, execution and development may often outweight the benefits gained by preventing possible failures. This approach revolves around the use of an abstract dependency graph which is created from the system in question. An abstract dependency graph is a directed graph , a graph of vertex graph theory vertices connected by one way edges. Most often, the vertices and edges of the graph represent the inputs and outputs of functions in or components of the system. By inspecting the created abstract dependency graph, the developer can detect syntactic anomalies or Preece anomalies in the system. While anomalies are not always defects, they often provide clues to finding defects in a system. Therefore, the anomalies in a system help point the developer in the right direction in finding defects. Anomalies There are four main types of anomaly Redundancies &ndash A chunk of the graph is redundant if its terminals can be reached if the chunk is removed from ... more semantic than syntactic. Kernel methods KMs are a class of algorithms for pattern analysis , whose best known element is the support vector machine SVM . The general task of pattern analysis is to find and study general types of relations for example Cluster analysis clusters , ranking s, principal components , correlation s, Categorization classification s in general types of data such as sequences, text documents, sets of points, vectors, images, etc. . KMs approach the problem by mapping the data into a high dimensional feature space , where each coordinate corresponds to one feature of the data items, data transformation transforming the data into a set of points in a Euclidean space . In that space, a variety of methods can be used to find relations in the data. Since the mapping can be quite general not necessarily linear , for example , the relations found in this way are accordingly very general. This approach is called the kernel trick . KMs owe their name to the use of Kernel statistics kernel function s, which enable them to operate in the feature space without ever computing the coordinates of the data in that space, but rather by simply computing the inner product s between the images of all pairs of data in the feature space. This operation is often computationally cheaper than the explicit computation of the coordinates. Kernel functions have been introduced for sequence data, graphs, text, images, as well as vectors. Algorithms capable of operating with kernels include Support vector machine SVM , Gaussian process es, Ronald Fisher Fisher s linear discriminant analysis LDA , principal components analysis PCA , canonical correlation analysis , ridge regression , spectral clustering ... recognition . nofootnotes date January 2011 References J. Refimprove date February 2008 Mill s Methods are five methods of Inductive reasoning induction described by philosopher John Stuart Mill in his 1843 book A System of Logic . They are intended to illuminate issues of Causality causation . Direct method of agreement If two or more instances of the phenomenon under investigation have only one circumstance in common, the circumstance in which alone all the instances agree, is the cause or effect of the given phenomenon. For a property to be a Necessary and sufficient conditions necessary condition it must always be present if the effect is present. Since this is so, then we are interested in looking at cases where the effect is present and taking note of which properties, among those considered to be possible necessary conditions are present and which are absent. Obviously, any properties which are absent when the effect is present cannot be necessary conditions for the effect. Symbolically, the method of agreement can be represented as A B C D occur together with w x y z A E F G occur together with w t u v Therefore A is the cause, the effect, or part of the cause of w. These initial settings may be which player starts or gets a particular end of a pitch or takes on a particular role. Some selection methods are more or less truly random e.g. coin toss and some involve a certain amount of skill, often psychological e.g. Rock, Paper, Scissors . Common selection methods Coin toss main Coin toss Used in many sports for choice of ends, kick off, etc. Saa Boo Three main Saa Boo Three Saa Boo Three , is a very famous Indian hand game used mainly as a fast simultaneous selection elimination method. One person chants Counting out game One potato, two potato, three potato four, five potato, six potato, seven potato, more . with each word pointing to the next spud going round clockwise. The spud on which the word more falls is eliminated and the player holds that hand behind their back. The chant starts again from the next spud. When a player has both their spuds eliminated they are out until there is only one winner. If you are smart enough, you can rig the game by knowing the progression.
