In machine learning , instance based learning or memory based learning is a family of learning algorithms that, instead of performing explicit generalization, compare new problem instances with instances seen in training, which have been stored in memory. Instance based learning is a kind of lazy learning . It is called instance based because it constructs hypotheses directly from the training instances themselves. ref name aima733 Stuart J. ISBN 0 13 080302 2 ref This means that the hypothesis complexity can grow with the data ref name aima733 in the worst case, a hypothesis is a list of n training items and Classification machine learning classification takes Big O notation O n . One advantage that instance based learning has over other methods of machine learning is its ability to adapt its model to previously unseen data. Where other methods generally require the entire set of training data to be re examined when one instance is changed, instance based learners may simply store a new instance or throw an old instance away. 1. Instance (computer science)

In object oriented programming an instance is an occurrence or a copy of an Object computer science object , whether currently executing or not. Instances of a Class computer programming class share the same set of attributes, yet will typically differ in what those attributes contain. For example, a class Employee would describe the attributes common to all instances of the Employee class. For the purposes of the task being solved Employee objects may be generally alike, but vary in such attributes as name and salary . The description of the class would itemize such attributes and define the operations or actions relevant for the class, such as increase salary or change telephone number. One could then talk about one instance of the Employee object with name Jane Doe and another instance of the Employee object with name John Doe . 1. Multiple-instance learning

orphan date December 2007 Multiple instance learning is a variation on supervised learning . Instead of receiving a set of instances which are labeled positive or negative, the learner receives a set of bags that are labeled positive or negative. Each bag contains many instances. A bag is labeled negative if all the instances in it are negative. On the other hand, a bag is labeled positive if there is at least one instance in it which is positive. From a collection of labeled bags, the learner tries to induce a concept that will label individual instances correctly. Multiple instance learning was originally proposed under this name by harvtxt Dietterich Lathrop Lozano P rez 1997 , but earlier examples of similar research exist, for instance in the work on handwriting handwritten digit optical character recognition recognition by harvtxt Keeler Rumelhart Leow 1990 . Numerous researchers have worked on adapting classical classification techniques, such as support vector machines or boosting , to work within the context of multiple instance learning. 1. Single-instance storage

Refimprove date October 2007 Single instance storage is a system s ability to keep one copy of content that multiple users or computers share. It is a means to eliminate data duplication and to increase efficiency. SIS is frequently implemented in file system s, e mail server software, data backup and other storage related solutions. In the case of an e mail server, single instance storage would mean that a single copy of a message is held within its database whilst individual mailboxes access the content through a reference pointer. However there is a common misconception that the primary benefit of single instance storage in mail server solutions is a reduction in disk space requirements. The truth is that its primary benefit is to greatly enhance delivery efficiency of messages sent to large distribution lists. In a mail server scenario disk space savings from single instance storage are transient and drop off very quickly over time. 1. The Instance of the Letter in the Unconscious, or Reason Since Freud

The Instance of the Letter in the Unconscious, or Reason Since Freud is an essay by the psychoanalysis psychoanalytic theorist Jacques Lacan , originally delivered as a talk on May 9, 1957 and later published in Lacan s 1966 book crits . Lacan begins the essay by declaring it to be situated halfway between speech and writing. By doing so, he foreshadows both the essay s notorious opacity and its theme the relationship between Speech communication speech and language and the place of the subject in relation to both. The Meaning of the Letter The essay s first section, The Meaning of the Letter , introduces the concept of the letter , which Lacan describes as the material medium that concrete discourse borrows from language crits , p.  495 . In his commentary on the essay, the Lacanian psychoanalyst Bruce Fink argues that the letter is best thought of as the differential element which separates two words, noting that In a hundred years, drizzle might be pronounced dritszel , but that will be of no importance as long as the place occupied by the consonant in the middle of the word is filled by something that allows us to continue to differentiate the word from other similar words in the English language, such as dribble . Fink, Lacan To The Letter , p.  78 Lacan indicates that the letter, when thought of as a material medium in this way, cannot be directly manipulated so as to alter language or intersubjective meaning. In a footnote to the essay, he praises Stalin for rejecting the idea promoted by some communist philosophers of creating a unique, specifically communist language by noting that language is not a superstructure .
