Hadrian the Seventh also known as Hadrian VII is a 1904 novel by the England English novelist Frederick Rolfe , who wrote under the pseudonym Baron Corvo . Rolfe s best known work, this novel of extreme wish fulfillment developed out of an article he wrote on the Papal Conclave to elect the successor to Pope Leo XIII . The prologue introduces us to George Arthur Rose a transparent double for Rolfe himself a failed candidate for the priesthood denied his vocation by the machinations and bungling of the Roman Catholic ecclesiastical machinery, now living alone with his yellow cat. Rose is visited by two prominent churchmen, one a Cardinal Catholicism Cardinal Archbishop . The two propose to right the wrongs done to him, ordain him a priest, and take him to Rome where the Conclave to elect the new Pope has reached deadlock. When he arrives in Rome he finds that the Cardinals have been inspired, divinely or otherwise, to offer him the Papacy. He accepts, and since the only previous English Pope was Pope Adrian IV Adrian or Hadrian IV , he takes the name Hadrian VII. The novel develops with this unconventional, chain smoking Englishman peremptorily reforming the Church and the early 20th century world, against inevitable opposition from the established Roman Catholic hierarchy , rewarding his friends and trouncing his enemies. Image Memoirs of Hadrian.jpg thumb Cover of the English language edition. Italictitle Memoirs of Hadrian lang fr M moires d Hadrien is a novel by the France French writer Marguerite Yourcenar about the life and death of Roman Emperor Hadrian . The book was first published in France in French language French in 1951 in literature 1951 as M moires d Hadrien , and was an immediate success, meeting with enormous critical acclaim. The historical Hadrian did write an autobiography, but it has been lost. The book takes the form of a letter to Hadrian s cousin and eventual successor Mark Marcus Aurelius . The emperor meditates on military triumphs, love of poetry and music , philosophy, and his passion for his lover Antinous , all in a manner not inconsistent with Gustave Flaubert s melancholy of the antique world. Yourcenar noted in her own postscript Carnet de note to the original edition, quoting Flaubert, that she had chosen Hadrian as the subject of the novel in part because he had lived at a time when the Roman gods were no longer believed in, but Christianity was not yet established. This intrigued her for what she saw as parallels to her own post war European world. The English edition was translated by Grace Frick. Image Hadrianus gate.jpg 240px thumb right Facade of the gate facing the old town. The Hadrian s Gate , or Hadrianus Gate , or kap lar last one means The Three Gates in Turkish language Turkish is a triumphal arch which was built in the name of the Roman Empire Roman emperor Hadrian , who visited Antalya in the year 130. It has three arched gates. According to the legend, Sultan Belkis, the Queen of Sheba , is said to have passed under those gates and enjoyed a happy day in the palace in Aspendos on her way to visit King Solomon . Formerly the city walls enclosed the outside of the gate and it was not used for many years. This may be the reason why it has not been harmed, and it was only revealed when the walls collapsed. It is considered as Pamphylia s most beautiful Gate. The upper part has three apertures in the shape of a cupola, and except for the pillars is built entirely of white marble. The ornamentation is very striking. The original Gate was two storeys but little is known of the top storey. On either side of the Gate are towers, which are known not to have been built at the same time. The southern one is known as the Julia Sancta tower and is a work of the Hadrian era. It was constructed of plain stone blocks. While the base of the northern tower belongs to antiquity, the upper part is left over from the Seljuks .
