  1. Chromosomal polymorphism

In genetics , chromosomal polymorphism is a condition where one species contains members with varying chromosome counts or shapes. Polymorphism biology Polymorphism is a general concept in biology where more than one version of a trait is present in a population. In some cases of differing counts, the difference in chromosome counts is the result of a single chromosome undergoing fission, where it splits into two smaller chromosomes, or two undergoing fusion, where two chromosomes join to form one. This condition has been detected in many species. Trichomycterus davisi , for example, is an extreme case where the polymorphism was present within a single Chimera genetics chimeric individual. ref cite journal journal Genet. Mol. 1. Chromosomal translocation

Image Translocation 4 20.png thumb Chromosomal translocation of the 4th and 20th chromosome . In genetics , a chromosome translocation is a chromosome abnormality caused by rearrangement of parts between nonhomologous chromosomes . A gene fusion may be created when the translocation joins two otherwise separated genes, the occurrence of which is common in cancer . It is detected on cytogenetics or a karyotype of affected cell biology cells . There are two main types, reciprocal also known as non Robertsonian and Robertsonian . Also, translocations can be balanced in an even exchange of material with no genetic information extra or missing, and ideally full functionality or unbalanced where the exchange of chromosome material is unequal resulting in extra or missing gene s . Reciprocal non Robertsonian translocations Reciprocal translocations are usually an exchange of material between nonhomologous chromosomes. 1. Mitotic crossover

Mitotic crossover is a rare type of genetic recombination that may occur in some types of somatic cells during mitosis . Mitotic crossover may occur in organisms that do not have a cycle of sexual reproduction where chromosomal crossover would normally occur during meiosis to generate genetic variation. It can only occur in diploid cells and a pair of chromosomes is required for the crossover to occur. The mitotic crossover results in the production of homozygous allele combinations in all heterozygous genes that are located on that chromosome arm distal to the crossover. Thus when a mitotic crossover occurs, genes that were previously recessive are expressed creating a new phenotype. Mitotic crossover is known to occur in some asexually reproducing fungi and in normal human cells, where the event may allow normally recessive cancer causing genes to be expressed and thus predispose the cell in which it occurs to the development of cancer . For use in experimentation with genomes in model organisms such as Drosophila melanogaster , mitotic recombination can be induced via X ray and the FLP FRT recombination system. Such distinction of devices was introduced by IBM . The crossing wires in a cable or in a connector adaptor allows connecting two devices directly, output of one to input of the other, letting two terminal DTE devices communicate without an interconnecting Ethernet hub hub knot, i.e. Personal computer PC s, linking two or more hubs, switches or routers DCE together, possibly to work as one wider device. 1. Crossover voting

elections In open primary elections in the United States , crossover voting refers to a behavior in which voters who normally participate in the primary of one party instead vote in the primary of another party. The behavior typically happens when the nominee of the one party is a foregone conclusion or when a candidate in one party s primary has an appeal to the voters in another party The motives for crossover voting are sometimes strategic. Thus crossover voting has been used by voters to cast votes in the party a voter is opposed to in order to nominate a candidate which can be more easily beaten by the candidate the voter actually supports. Some consider crossover voting to be a form of electoral fraud . References reflist Category Elections Category Decision theory Category Democracy poli term stub ...   more details

  1. Crossover switch

unreferenced date February 2008 In electronics , a crossover switch or matrix switch is a switch connecting multiple inputs to multiple outputs using complex array matrices designed to switch any one input path to any one or more output path s . There are blocking and non blocking types of cross over switches. These switches can be mechanical Microelectromechanical systems , electrical, or optical non linear optics , and are used in electronics and fiber optic circuits, as well as some optical computer s. A banyan switch is one type of cross over switch. Their complexity depends on the topology of the individual switches in a switch matrix how wide it is by how many plies or layers of switches it takes , to implement your desired crossover logic. Typical crossover matrices follow the formula an N N Banyan switch uses N 2 log N elements. Other formulas are used for differing number of cross over layers and scaling is possible, but becomes very large and complex with large N N arrays. Computer aided design CAD and Artificial intelligence AI can be used to take the drudgery out of these designs. The switches are measured by how many stages, and how many up down sorters and crosspoints. Switches often have buffers built in to speed up switching speeds. A typical switch may have a 2 2 and 4 4 down sorter, followed by an 8 8 up sorter, followed by a 2 2 crosspoint Banyan switch network, resulting in a 3 level sorting for a 3 stage banyan network switch. The future is moving to larger arrays of inputs and outputs needed in a very small space. See Wafer fabrication and VLA s.
