unreferenced date February 2011 Loulis born May 10, 1978 is a chimpanzee who has learned to communicate in American Sign Language. Loulis was named for two caregivers Louise and Lisa at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where he was born. After ten months at Yerkes, Loulis was transferred to Oklahoma with Roger Fouts and Washoe chimpanzee Washoe , his adoptive mother. In 1980, the family moved to Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington. By 1993, the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute CHCI was built for the family to reside. Loulis s biological mother remained at Yerkes and was used for medical research. Washoe and 3 other chimpanzees Tatu, Dar, and Moja were raised as deaf human children and acquired American Sign Language . The chimpanzees regularly use the hand signals to communicate with each other and humans. Loulis is the only chimpanzee in the family who was not cross fostered he wasn t raised by humans but rather Washoe and the other chimpanzees . After eight days with Washoe, Loulis learned his first sign. For the first five years of his life, Loulis s human handlers only used seven signs around him the signs used were who , which , want , where , name , that , and sign . Loulis was able to acquire the use of ASL from Washoe. The details of this research can be found in Teaching Sign Language to Chimpanzees edited by Allen and Beatrix Gardner. Wikify date December 2010 Gua was a chimpanzee raised as though it were a human child by scientists Winthrop N. Kellogg and Luella A. Kellogg alongside their son Donald. Gua and Donald were raised as brother and sister. In tests Gua often tested ahead of Donald in reading and understanding. Slight differences in their placement included people recognition. Gua recognized people from their clothes and their smell while Donald recognized them by their faces. The parting difference came with language. Donald was about 16 months and Gua was a little over a year old when they had language testing. Gua could not speak, but Donald could form words. When Donald began to copy Gua s sounds the experiment ended. On March 28, 1932, nine months into it the Kelloggs officially ended the experiment. Gua was returned to the primate center with Dr. Robert Mearns Yerkes in Florida. References W.N. Kellogg and L.A. She first worked in Missouri, then in Santa Barbara, and then Pennsylvania. She first was exposed to language token training in 1967. Sarah was the subject, along with 3 other chimpanzees who were exposed to language token training. One of the chimpanzees failed to learn a single word. But Sarah, Elizabeth and Peony were able to parse and also produce stream s of Lexical analysis token s which obeyed a grammar . She used a special board with plastic symbols to correctly parse various syntactic Expression mathematics expressions including if then else . When the Premacks decided they no longer wanted to work with chimpanzees in 1987, Sarah was sent to Sarah Boysen s Chimp Center at the Ohio State University , where she lived and worked with other enculturated chimpanzees Kermit, Darrell, Bobby, Sheba, Keeli, Ivy, Harper and Emma. He made the piles of stones only on the part of his island facing the crowds and his behaviour shows that forward planning isn t a uniquely human trait. To control his behavior and keep his hormone levels down, zookeepers have castrated Santino. He completed more than 1,250 hours of training for his mission at the University of Kentucky and Holloman United States Air Force Air Force Base. His training was more intense than that of Ham the Chimp Ham , the Americans first chimp in space, because Enos would be exposed to weightlessness and a higher g force g for longer periods of time. His training included psychomotor training and aircraft flights. Enos was selected to make the first orbital animal flight only three days before the launch. Two months before allowing a chimp to be launched into orbit, NASA had launched Mercury Atlas 4 on September 13, 1961, to conduct the same mission with a crewman simulator in the spacecraft. Enos flew into space on board Mercury Atlas 5 on November 29, 1961. He completed his first orbit in 1 hour and 28.5 minutes. ref Animals In Space From Research Rockets to the Space Shuttle, Chris Dubbs and Colin Burgess author Colin Burgess , 2007 ref Enos was originally scheduled to complete three orbits, but was brought back after the second orbit because the spacecraft was not maintaining proper Attitude dynamics and control attitude . According to observers, Enos jumped for joy and ran around the deck of the recovery ship enthusiastically shaking the hands of his rescuers. Enos flight was a full dress rehearsal for the next Mercury launch on February 20, 1962, which would make Lt. Colonel John Glenn the first American to orbit the Earth, after astronauts Alan Shepard, Jr. and Gus Grissom s successful suborbital space flights.
