  1. Ancestor

Unreferenced date December 2009 An ancestor is a parent or Recursion recursively the parent of an ancestor i.e., a grandparent , great grandparent , great great grandparent, and so forth . Two individuals have a genetics genetic relationship if one is the ancestor of the other, or if they share a common ancestor. In evolution ary theory, species which share an evolutionary ancestor are said to be of common descent . However, this concept of ancestry does not apply to some bacteria and other organisms capable of horizontal gene transfer . Assuming that all of an individual s ancestors are otherwise unrelated to each other, that individual has 2 sup n sup ancestors in the n th generation before him and a total of about 2 sup g 1 sup ancestors in the g generations before him. In practice, however, it is clear that the vast majority of ancestors of humans and indeed any other species are multiply related see Pedigree collapse . Consider n 40 the human species is more than 40 generations old, yet the number 2 sup 40 sup , approximately 10 sup 12 sup or one trillion, dwarfs the World population Number of humans who have ever lived number of humans that have ever lived . Ignoring the possibility of other inter relationships even distant ones among ancestors, an individual has a total of 2046 ancestors up to the 10th generation, 1024 of which are 10th generation ancestors. With the same assumption, any given person has over a billion 30th generation ancestors who lived roughly 1000 years ago and this theoretical number increases past the estimated total population of the world in around AD 1000. All of these ancestors will have contributed to one s autosomal DNA is concerned this excludes ... this practice is sometimes known as ancestor worship or, more accurately, ancestor veneration . 1. Top ancestor

Refimprove date July 2010 In genealogy , a top ancestor is the oldest ancestor in a continuous sequence of ancestors. This means, that a continuous line of parent child connections exists between the top ancestor and the subject of the genealogical study, such as a living person. However, the top ancestor s parents are not or not yet known. Top ancestors are sometimes used to describe the status of a genealogical research project, or in order to compare the availability of genealogical data in different times and places. Often, top ancestors are implied to be patrilineality patrilineal . If a patrilineal dynasty is considered, each such dynasty has exactly one top ancestor. The LCA of v and w in T is the shared ancestor of v and w that is located farthest from the root. Computation of lowest common ancestors may be useful, for instance, as part of a procedure for determining the distance between pairs of nodes in a tree the distance from v to w can be computed as the distance from the root to v , plus the distance from the root to w , minus twice the distance from the root to their lowest common ancestor. 1. Chimpanzee-human last common ancestor

The chimpanzee human last common ancestor CHLCA , CLCA, or C H LCA is the last individual, an African ape, that both humans and chimpanzee s share as a common ancestor . The CHLCA is generally used as an anchor point for calculating single nucleotide polymorphism SNP rates in human genetic studies where chimpanzees are used as outgroup. The CHLCA is frequently cited as an anchor for molecular TMRCA Time to most recent common ancestor determination because the two species of chimpanzee, the Bonobos and the Chimp, are the species most genetically similar to Homo sapiens . Time estimates There are no known fossils that represent the CHLCA, so the age of the CHLCA is an estimate. The fossil find of Ardipithecus kadabba , Sahelanthropus tchadensis , and Orrorin tugenensis are closest in age and expected morphology of the CHLCA and suggest the LCA is older than 7 million years. Earliest studies of apes suggest the CHLCA may have been as old as 25 million years, however protein studies in the 1970s suggested the CHLCA was less than 8 million years in age. Genetic methods based on Orangutan Human and Gibbon Human LCA times have then been used to estimate Chimpanzee Human LCA of 6 million years and LCA times between 5 and 7 million years are currently used in the literature. ref group note Studies have pointed to the slowing molecular clock as monkeys evolved into apes and apes evolved into humans ... in physical anthropology, 1971 ref Because chimps and humans share a matrilineal ancestor, establishing the geological age of that last ancestor allows the estimation of the mutation rate. It explores the story behind the discovery of an early primate fossil , Darwinius masillae , nicknamed Darwinius Ida , in a shale quarry in Germany . The fossil is believed to be around 47 million years old, and is extraordinarily well preserved. Originally unearthed in 1983, Ida lay in the hands of a private collector for 20 years before it was shown to a Norwegian paleontologist , J rn Hurum Dr J rn Hurum . Realising that Ida could turn out to be a significant transitional form missing link between modern primates, lemur s and lower mammal s, he persuaded the Natural History Museum at the University of Oslo Natural History Museum in Oslo to purchase the fossil and assembled an international team of experts to study it. Their findings were announced in a press conference and the online publication of a scientific paper on 19 May 2009. The BBC programme was narrated by David Attenborough .
