Proposed deletion dated concern Unsourced essay timestamp 20110405123910 In the context of mid 19th century Vienna, one must be very careful not to confuse liberalism with what we call liberalism today. The contemporary association of liberalism denotes a position in opposition to what we call conservatism the defense of capitalism, the rejection of welfare, and the emphasis on self reliant individualism. Liberalism today means a position advocating equal rights, social welfare, and other causes. However, the liberalism of the 19th century Vienna was liberal only in the sense that the Press was granted freedom individuals were at liberty to pursue their economic interests and that Jews, hitherto denied citizenship, were also granted it. The liberalism of Austria was more like our present day conservatism because it was mainly aim at restricting an absolute monarchy and its repressive policies so that industrialism and capitalism could flourish. Consequently, 19th century Austrian liberals sought to be left alone and to retain political power that would enable them to pursue their own economic self interests, e.g. establishing a free press and voting rights for property owners. They were not in favor, however, of equal rights for all, or in pursuing a genuine democracy. On the contrary liberals were, on the whole, not interested in extending voting rights to women or to laborers or the lower classes nor where they interested in social welfare, nor were they willing to touch the question of the separation of church and state. They were quite willing to concede to the alliance between the nation and baroque roman Catholicism so long as the court did not enforce its Roman Catholic beliefs in such a way as to hinder industry or restrict rights, and so long as it observed the rule of parliament etc. Liberals could identify with the social and political order because they were basi cally in control of the Parliament and the bureaucratic apparatus. ... more details
