Cross phase modulation XPM is a nonlinear optical effect where one wavelength of light can affect the phase of another wavelength of light through the optical Kerr effect . Applications of XPM Cross phase modulation can be used as a technique for adding information to a light stream by modifying the Phase waves phase of a coherence physics coherent optical beam with another beam through interactions in an appropriate non linear medium. This technique is applied to fiber optic communications . XPM in DWDM applications In DWDM applications with intensity modulation and direct detection IM DD the effect of XPM is a two step process First the signal is phase modulated by the copropagating second signal. In a second step dispersion leads to a transformation of the phase modulation into a power variation. Additionally the dispersion results in a walk off between the channels and thereby reduces the XPM effect. Extreme project management XPM refers to a Method software engineering method of management managing very complex and very uncertain project s. Extreme project management differs from traditional project management mainly in its open, elastic and undeterministic approach. The main focus of XPM is on the human side of project management e.g. managing project stakeholders , rather than on intricate scheduling techniques and heavy formalism. Extreme project management corresponds to extreme programming . Advanced approaches to extreme project management utilize the principles of human interaction management to deal with the complexities of human collaboration. Image vtwm.jpg thumb A screen shot of Vtwm in Linux From Scratch LFS running mrxvt , xmms and the Opera web browser Vtwm the Virtual Tabbed Window Manager is an X window manager that was developed from the twm codebase. The first release was in 1990, and it is very much an old school window manager. It added features like X Pixmap xpm icons, autoraising of windows, and a virtual desktop the latter feature is from where the program takes its name. Later additions include playing sounds in response to window manager events, and Motif widget toolkit Motif style window decorations in place of the flat, 2D titlebars commonly associated with twm. Vtwm was one of the first window managers to have an icon manager, a box of click able windows which mapped to the application windows currently on the desktop. Clicking the entry in the icon manager iconizes deiconizes the associated application. This behavior is common today in taskbar s in many operating systems. Features A stacking window manager Written in C Uses the xlib toolkit opensource and freely available No menubar Lightweight Has few dependencies Support for multiple desktop s Other features of twm, including shaped window titlebars, are faithfully incorporated into vtwm. The focus of vtwm is to maintain simplicity and compatibility. XBM files differ markedly from most image files in that they take the form of C programming language C source files. This means that they can be compiled directly into an application without any preprocessing steps, but it also makes them far larger than their raw pixel data would be each byte of image data takes at least 4 bytes in a XBM file . Format XBM data typically appears in header s .h files and consist of a series of static unsigned char Array data structure arrays containing the monochrome pixel data. They feature one array per image stored in the header. The first two defines specify the height and width of the bitmap in pixels. The second two, if they exist, specify the position of any hotspot within the bitmap. Programmers use a hotspot within the image for bitmapped cursors to define where to position the pointer of the cursor, generally at 0,0. In a single mode optical fiber , the zero dispersion wavelength is the wavelength or wavelengths at which material dispersion optics dispersion and waveguide dispersion cancel one another. In all silica based optical fiber s, minimum material dispersion occurs naturally at a wavelength of approximately 1300nm. Single mode fibers may be made of silica based glasses containing dopants that shift the material dispersion wavelength, and thus, the zero dispersion wavelength, toward the minimum loss window at approximately 1550nm. The engineering tradeoff is a slight increase in the minimum attenuation coefficient . Such fiber is called dispersion shifted fiber . Another way to alter the dispersion is changing the core size and the refractive indices of the material of Fiber optics Principle of operation core and Cladding fiber optics cladding . Because fiber optic materials are already highly optimized for low scattering and high transparency alternative ways to change the refractive index were investigated. As a straight forward solution tapered fiber s and holey fiber s or photonic crystal fiber s PCF were produced. Essentially they replace the cladding by air. This improves the contrast of refractive indices by a factor of 10. Therefore the effective index is changed, especially for longer wavelengths. This type of refractive index change versus wavelength due to different geometry is called waveguide dispersion . As these narrow waveguides 1 3  m core diameter are combined with ultrashort pulse s at the zero dispersion wavelength pulses are not instantly destroyed by dispersion. After reaching a certain peak power within the pulse the non linear refractive index starts to play an important role leading to frequency generation processes like self phase modulation SPM , modulational instability , soliton optics soliton generation and soliton fission , cross phase modulation XPM and others. All these processes generate new frequency components, meaning that narrow ... more details

XPaint alternatively capitalized Xpaint was originally written by David Koblas around 1993, and was then extended by Torsten Martinsen from 1996 to 1999. Since around 2000, it is maintained and developed by Jean Pierre Demailly. Its main goal is to be a lightweight and simple to use raster graphics editor. Features XPaint features a substantial number of standard and less standard paint operations. It allows for editing and browsing multiple images simultaneously, and supports most of the common bitmap formats, including Portable Network Graphics PNG , Graphics Interchange Format GIF , TIFF , Truevision TGA TGA , portable pixmap PPM , X PixMap XPM , XBM , BMP file format BMP , ICO file format ICO , JPEG , JPEG2000 , Progressive Graphics File PGF etc. It can also read and import certain vector formats such as PostScript , PDF , SVG , as well as plain text or TeX, LaTeX files whenever a TeX system and PostScript PDF utilities are installed . XPaint is divided into a toolbox area, for selecting the current paint operation, and paint windows for modifying creating images. Each paint window has access to its own color palette and set of patterns. As XPaint only uses the basic image libraries PNG, JPEG, JPEG2000, TIFF along with the X11, Fontconfig and Freetype libraries, it has a very small memory footprint and very few dependencies. As a consequence, it can be compiled on most Unix systems. Recent versions have support for advanced image manipulations image zooming and resizing, filters, color modifications, separation of RGB channels , scripting, layers, edition of alpha channel and of transparent images, vector formats import, truetype fonts and anti aliasing, geometric transformations of such ... more details
