William attended the University of Glasgow in 1757 where he focused on his talent for learning languages. He graduated from the University in 1763 and was employed by Charles Cathcart, 9th Lord Cathcart , as tutor to his two sons. William travelled to Russian Empire Russia with the Cathcart family, after Lord Cathcart was appointed List of Ambassadors from the United Kingdom to Russia ambassador to Russia in 1768. It was during these travels that Richardson described Russia through a series of letters. He later had them published, in 1784, under the title Anecdotes of the Russian Empire in a series of letters, written, a few years ago, from St. Petersburg . These letters would later go down as a very accurate detail of Russian society. After returning to Scotland in 1772, Richardson was appointed Professor of Humanity, Glasgow professor of humanities at the University of Glasgow in 1773. With the ability to attract many great scholars, and also being a very popular lecturer, Glasgow became a prestigious institution. Richardson would also publish five works criticizing Shakespeare . Richardson was very interested in not only English literature , but he also read German, Italian, and French literature. He died a single man in Glasgow. William Emanuel Richardson September 3, 1886&ndash November 3, 1948 was a Democratic Party United States Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania . William E. Richardson was born on a farm the old Daniel Boone homestead near Stonersville, Pennsylvania . He moved to Bernville, Pennsylvania , with his parents at an early age, where he attended the public schools. He graduated from Princeton University in 1910, and from the law department of Columbia University in New York City in 1913. He was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Reading, Pennsylvania . In 1914, he served with Ambulance Americaine , in Belgium and France in 1915, and with Squadron A, New York Cavalry, on the Mexico United States border in 1916. During the First World War he was commissioned a second lieutenant on August 15, 1917, and served with the Eightieth Cavalry Division, United States Army , and later with the Seventh Machine Gun Battalion, Third Division, and was discharged a first lieutenant on September 15, 1919. After the war resumed the practice of law in Reading. Richardson was elected as a Democrat to the 73rd United States Congress Seventy third and 74th United States Congress Seventy fourth Congresses. He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1936. He attended the Interparliamentary Union Conference in Budapest, Hungary , in 1936. WilliamRichardson 1749 &ndash 23 March 1822 was an Irish landowner from Richhill, County Armagh . He sat in the Irish House of Commons for Armagh County Parliament of Ireland constituency County Armagh , between 1783 and 1797. In 1807 he was elected to sit for Armagh UK Parliament constituency County Armagh in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom , serving until 1820. He was the great nephew of another WilliamRichardson 1656 1727 WilliamRichardson , who was Member of Parliament for County Armagh at the time of the Williamite War in Ireland . In 1775 Richardson married Dorothea Dolly Monroe b. 1754 , a daughter of Henry Monroe of Roes Hall, Tullylish . She was a noted beauty who while staying in Dublin with her aunt Frances Henry Loftus, 1st Earl of Ely Lady Loftus , had been courted by Henry Grattan , Sir Hercules Langrishe , Francis Andrews , Provost of Trinity College, Dublin Trinity College , and the recently widowed Viceroy George Townshend, 1st Marquess Townshend Lord Townshend . She had also been painted by Angelica Kauffman and alluded to in a poem by Oliver Goldsmith . Richardson and Dorothea had no children and she died in 1793 age thirty nine. Blessed WilliamRichardson 1572&ndash 1603 was a sixteenth century Roman Catholic English Martyrs English martyr . Richardson was born in the village of Wales, South Yorkshire . He studied for the Roman Catholic priesthood at seminaries in Valladolid and then Seville, both in Spain. He was ordained sometime between 1594 and 1600. William was then sent back to England, where he used the alias William Anderson. Soon after arriving in England, he was betrayed by a trusted person, arrested in London s Gray s Inn an Inn of Court , and imprisoned. He was tried and convicted within a week and hanged, drawn, and quartered. His was the final martyrdom to take place during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I as she was to die herself within a month. ref CathEncy wstitle Ven. William Merchant Richardson January 4, 1774 March 15, 1838 was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Massachusetts . He was born in Pelham, New Hampshire in 1774. He graduated from Harvard University in 1797 studied law was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Groton, Massachusetts , in 1804. He was elected as a Democratic Republican to the 12th United States Congress Twelfth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Joseph B. Varnum and was reelected to the 13th United States Congress Thirteenth Congress and served from November 4, 1811, to April 18, 1814, when he resigned. Richardson moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire , in 1814. He became a United States Attorney in 1814 and in 1816 was appointed New Hampshire Supreme Court chief justice of New Hampshire and served until his death. He died in Chester, New Hampshire in 1838, and is buried in the Old Cemetery there. He was the uncle of William Adams Richardson who was United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1873 to 1874.
