  1. Cultural depictions of Mary I of England

Mary I of England has been depicted in popular culture a number of times. Literature Mark Twain s novel The Prince and the Pauper includes a depiction of Mary before her accession When his royal sister, the grimly holy Lady Mary, set herself to reason with him against the wisdom of his course in pardoning so many people who would otherwise be jailed, or hanged, or burned ... the boy pauper pretending to be King Edward VI was filled with generous indignation, and commanded her to go to her closet, and beseech God to take away the stone that was in her breast, and give her a human heart. The short appearance had a considerable influence on her negative image Citation needed date August 2008 , given the enduring popularity of Twain s work. His depiction of her as a cold and cruel person seems to be connected both to Twain s outspoken atheism and to the strong anti Catholic prejudice prevalent in American society at the time of writing. The 2004 historical fiction novel The Queen s Fool , by Philippa Gregory , depicts Mary s rise to power and reign in a very sympathetic light, and makes an effort to revise her long lasting horrific image. It shows her through the eyes of a devoted and loving servant without hiding the horror of the persecutions. In the novel Elizabeth I Red Rose of the House of Tudor , part of the juvenile historical fiction series The Royal Diaries , Mary is a prominent character and is portrayed as a bitter rival to her half sister Elizabeth. 1. Cultural depictions of Richard I of England

Richard I of England has been depicted many times in romantic fiction and popular culture. Robin Hood The Scotland Scots philosopher and chronicler John Mair was the first to associate Richard with the Robin Hood legends in his Historia majoris Britannae, tam Angliae quam Scotiae 1521 . In the earliest Robin Hood ballads the only king mentioned is Edward our comely king , most probably Edward II of England Edward II or Edward III of England Edward III . However, Sir Walter Scott s novel Ivanhoe popularised Mair s linking of the Hood legends to Richard s reign, and it was taken up by later novelists and by cinema. Typically Robin is depicted upholding justice in Richard s name against John and his officials during the king s imprisonment. Other literature Richard has appeared frequently in fiction, as a result of the chivalric revival of the Romanticism Romantic era. In 1822, he was the subject of Eleanor Anne Porden s epic poem , C ur de Lion . After Ivanhoe , in which he is depicted as initially adopting the pseudonym of Le Noir Fain ant The Black Sluggard , Sir Walter Scott portrayed Richard in The Talisman 1825 The Talisman , a highly fictionalised treatment of the Third Crusade . The young Richard is also a major character in James Goldman James Goldman s play The Lion in Winter 1966 , which depicts him as homosexual. He features in Graham Shelby s The Kings of Vain Intent and, more centrally, in The Devil is Loose , Norah Lofts The Lute Player , and Jean Plaidy Eleanor Hibbert s The Heart of the Lion . He is portrayed as a merciless Muslim killer in a novel that follows Arn Magnusson in the The Knight Templar Crusades trilogy Knight Templar Crusade Trilogy written by Swedish author Jan Guillou . William was the eldest son of William II, Duke of J lich and Maria of Guelders, half sister of Reginald III of Guelders Reginald III, Duke of Guelders . When Reginald III of Guelders died without heirs, William II of J lich claimed the Duchy of Guelders in the name of his wife. This led to the War of the Succession of Guelders against John II, Count of Blois , who was married to Machteld Mathilde, another sister of Reginald of Guelders. In 1377 Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor Emperor Charles IV granted Guelders to William, the son of William II, but it took two more years to consolidate his authority over the entire duchy.
