Hard inheritance is the exact opposite of the term soft inheritance , coined by Ernst Mayr to contrast ideas about Biological inheritance inheritance . Hard inheritance states that characteristics of an organism s offspring passed on through DNA will not be affected by the actions that the parental organism performs during its lifetime. For example a medieval blacksmith who uses only his right arm to forge steel will not sire a son with a stronger right arm than left because the blacksmith s actions do not alter his genetic code. The hard inheritance model excludes ideas of Lamarckism . Inheritance due to usage and non usage is excluded. Inheritance follows ideas of the synthetic theory of evolution References Richards EJ May 2006 . Inherited epigenetic variation revisiting soft inheritance . Nat. Rev. Peripatric and peripatry are terms from biogeography , referring to organism s whose ranges are closely adjacent but do not overlap, being separated where these organisms do not occur &ndash for example a wide river or a mountain range. Such organisms are usually closely related e.g. sister species , their distribution being the result of peripatric speciation . Peripatric speciation is a form of speciation , the formation of new species through evolution . In this form, new species are formed in isolated peripheral populations this is similar to allopatric speciation in that populations are isolated and prevented from exchanging genes. However, peripatric speciation, unlike allopatric speciation, proposes that one of the populations is much smaller than the other. Peripatric speciation was originally proposed by Ernst Mayr , and is related to the founder effect , because small living populations may undergo selection bottlenecks. ref cite journal author Provine WB title Ernst Mayr Genetics and speciation url http www.genetics.org cgi content full 167 3 1041 journal Genetics volume 167 issue 3 pages 1041 6 date 1 July 2004 pmid 15280221 pmc 1470966 ref Genetic drift is often proposed to play a significant role in peripatric speciation. ref cite journal author Templeton AR title The theory of speciation via the founder principle url http www.genetics.org cgi reprint 94 4 1011 journal Genetics volume 94 issue 4 pages 1011 38 date 1 April 1980 pmid 6777243 pmc 1214177 ref speciation show no evolution show no References Reflist DEFAULTSORT Peripatric Speciation Category Ecology Category Evolutionary biology Category Speciation Category Scientific classification Category Taxonomy pt Especia o perip trica ru ... more details
Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Magnetic boots are boot s that are Magnetism magnetic , which allows them to attach to the ferrous floor or Fuselage hulls of a spacecraft during weightlessness , and presumably would allow someone to walk around the Aircraft cabin cabin of a spacecraft, but they would still feel weightless. Use by astronauts Magnetic boots have not been used in actual space flight because of the potential for magnetic interference with navigation and communication systems. Use in science fiction Although many science fiction works assume some type of artificial gravity or use rotation to create gravity, magnetic boots still feature for purposes of exterior repairs or in emergency situations. Magnetic boots were notably used in Star Trek The Undiscovered Country to stage a surprise attack by disabling the artificial gravity on a ship and so providing a military tactics tactical advantage to attackers wearing them. The investigation of who had access to magnetic boots featured prominently in the plot. Other Star Trek depictions include Star Trek First Contact where the crew battle cyborgs on the hull of the ship and Star Trek Enterprise where they are used for hull repairs. Such boots were featured in the The Adventures of Tintin Tintin story Explorers on the Moon , to prevent the characters from floating around in the cabin if the artificial gravity failed.
