  1. White's

About the London gentlemen s club the BBC television comedy series Whites TV series White s is a London gentlemen s club , established at 4 Chesterfield Street in 1693 by Italian immigrant Francesco Bianco AKA Francis White . Originally it was established to sell hot chocolate , a rare and expensive commodity at the time and the source of its original title of Mrs. White s Chocolate House . These chocolate houses were seen as hotbeds of dissent by Charles II of England Charles II , but many converted into fashionable and respectable gentlemen s clubs like White s. As a side business, tickets were sold there to the productions at Her Majesty s Theatre King s Theatre and Royal Theatre Royal, Drury Lane Drury Lane Theatre . In 1778 it moved to numbers 37 38 St James s Street , on the east side of the street. From 1783 it was the unofficial headquarters of the Tory party, The Whigs Brooks s club was just down the road. A few apolitical and affable gentlemen managed to belong to both. The new architecture featured a bow window on the ground floor. In the later 18th century, the table directly in front of it became a seat of privilege, the throne of the most socially influential men in the club. This belonged to the arbiter elegantiarum , Beau Brummell , until he removed to the Continent in 1816, when William Arden, 2nd Baron Alvanley Lord Alvanley took the place of honour. It was here that Alvanley bet with a friend 3,000 as to which of two raindrops would first reach the bottom of a pane of the bow window. This was not the most eccentric bet in White s famous betting book. 1. White Brotherhood

distinguish Great White Brotherhood The White Brotherhood was an urban society or militia of Toulouse established in 1211 during the episcopate of Folquet de Marselha , so called from its members habit of wearing white crosses on their chests. The society, called a pious institution by William of Puylaurens , was militant towards usurer s Jews and Cathars , robbing them and destroying their homes. Most of the Whites came from the city proper. A Black Brotherhood , so called in opposition to the White, was soon formed and two factions went to war in the streets of Toulouse. According to Puylaurens blockquote Daily the two parties would clash, banners flying, bristling with weapons, even with cavalry in evidence. Through the agency of His servant the bishop, Our Lord came to bring them, not a bad peace but a good war. ref Oldenbourg, 153. ref blockquote From the White Brotherhood Folquet selected 500 men at arms and sent them to aid the Albigensian Crusade in besiege Lavaur . Pro Crusade Sirventes were even composed by the bishop for the troops to sing. Raymond VII of Toulouse Count Raymond VII , however, forbade the citizens to go and tried to force Folquet from the city. The White Brotherhood did go, however, and the bishop eventually left as well, to join the siege at Lavaur. The White Brotherhood gained notoriety among the opponents of the Crusade. The troubadour Gavaudan wrote the song A la plus longa nuech de l an in which he criticises the foolish white people , almost certainly a reference to the Whites of Toulouse. ref Kastner, 149. ref Sources div class references small Kastner, Leo E. http links.jstor.org sici?sici 0026 7937 28193104 2926 3A2 3C142 3AGCS 28G1 3E2.0.CO 3B2 E Gavaudan s Crusade Song.
