  1. Western Company of North America

    From the 1940s through the 1980s, The Western Company of North America was one of the pioneers of the acidizing process, a method of improving the flow from gas and oil wells. In 1939, after working as a Sales Engineer with Reed Roller Bit Company in Houston , Eddie Chiles founded the Western Company of North America. He started the company with two trucks and three employees. Western served the petroleum industry with technical services required in the discovery and production of oil and gas. The company grew to become a major oil services firm, primarily in acidizing, fracturing and cementing. At its peak, the Western Company had over 5,000 employees and annual worldwide revenues of over 500 million. Western also featured an innovative television campaign with commercials telling viewers If you don t have an oil well, get one you ll love doing business with Western The Western Company also operated an offshore drilling company, run by Mr. Chiles brother, during the 1970s. The company was sold to BJ Services Company BJ Services in 1995.     The 1996 Western North America summer blackouts were two large scale power outage s that occurred across Western Canada, America, and Mexico in 1996. They were spread 6 weeks apart, and are thought to be similarly caused by over demand during a hot summer. Though affecting millions, the blackouts were for the most part just an inconvenience, and not emergencies. On both occasions planes continued to take off and land, and power was restored within a few minutes or hours.     The Caribbean bioregion is a biogeography biogeographic region that includes the islands of the Caribbean Sea , which share a flora and fauna distinct from surrounding bioregions. The Caribbean bioregion, as described by the World Wildlife Fund , includes the Greater Antilles Cuba , Hispaniola , Puerto Rico , and Jamaica , the Lesser Antilles , the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands , and Aruba , Bonaire , and Cura ao . It does not include Trinidad and Tobago these islands rest on South America s shallow continental shelf , and have been historically part of the South American continent. The climate of the ecoregion is tropical, and varies from humid to arid. The bioregion includes Tropical moist forests , tropical dry forests , tropical pine forests , flooded grasslands and savannas , xeric shrublands , and mangrove s. The Caribbean bioregion s distinct flora and fauna was shaped by long periods of physical separation from the neighboring continents, allowing plants and animals to evolve in isolation. Other plants and animals arrived via long distance dispersal or island hopping from North America and South America. Three mammal families are endemic to the bioregion the Solenodontidae includes two species of Solenodon , one species on Cuba, the other on Hispaniola. Fossil evidence shows that the family was once more widespread in North America. Family Nesophontidae , or the West Indian shrews, contained a single genus, Nesophontes , which inhabited Cuba, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico and the Cayman Islands.
