The Web3DConsortium is a non profit organization not for profit , member funded industry consortium whose purpose is to define and develop the X3D royalty free open standard s file format and Run time system runtime architecture to represent and communicate 3D computer graphics 3D scenes . The development of Web3D 3D web based graphics has evolved from its beginnings as the Virtual Reality Modeling Language VRML to Extensible 3D X3D . Over recent years, advances in real time graphics and networking technology, and most notably the emergence of the Extensible Markup Language XML , have heavily influenced the development of the International Organization for Standardization ISO approved, freely available, X3D open standard. X3D embodies best practices in commercial real time graphics within the widely adopted framework of the World Wide Web family of technologies and standards and has no intellectual property restrictions. It provides a system for the storage, retrieval and playback of real time graphics content embedded in applications, all within an open architecture to support a wide array of domains and user scenarios. The arrangement allows for their students to enroll in courses at the other schools of the Consortium. The name stems from the historic influence of Quakers in the Philadelphia region and in the founding and administration of the Consortium s member schools. The three liberal arts colleges facilitate transportation between their respective campuses with free shuttle services. No such service is offered between the liberal arts colleges and Penn. The UNIFAC Consortium has been founded at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg at the chair of industrial chemistry of Prof. J rgen Gmehling Gmehling to invite private companies to support the further development of the group contribution method s UNIFAC and its successor modified UNIFAC Dortmund . Both models are used for the prediction of thermodynamic properties, especially the estimation of phase equilibria. The UNIFAC consortium is a successful example of private sponsorship of a public university in Germany. History The consortium was founded in 1997 when the public financing of the further development of the models became unlikely. The models UNIFAC and mod. UNIFAC Dortmund have already been used widely in software for the process simulation simulation and synthesis of chemical processes. Many companies doing process development in the field of chemical engineering had announced their support for a new way to subsidize the further development. This is facilitated through the support of over 40 companies, and is particularly aided by the DDBST GmbH, which supplies the complete Dortmund Data Bank DDB and several software tools for free. The GamePC Consortium was an ad hoc PC industry standards organization in the mid 1990s. It was founded through the joint efforts of ATI Technologies ATI s Ken Nicholson and Diamond Multimedia s Glenn Coffman . The two competing companies shared a common interest in the evolution of PC games and agreed that the PC graphics industry was limited by a lack of standards. At that time, the vast majority of games for PCs were written for MSDOS and had no standardized way to access expanded memory, accelerated graphics or digital audio capabilities. Based on the notion of a rising tide lifts all boats the two companies established the GamePC Consortium as a way for PC hardware manufacturers and PC game software publishers to combine their efforts to establish game API standards that would enable PCs to compete with successful console game systems such as the Sega Genesis. The GamePC Consortium s member companies included 80 of the leading entertainment hardware and software PC companies of the time, including Intel, nVidia, Rendition, Sigma Designs, ATI, Diamond Multimedia, S3 Graphics , Trident, Cirrus Logic, Rendermorphics and Lucas Arts.
