A Dictionary of the Internet. 2001. ref is a webpage that is delivered to the user exactly as stored, in contrast to dynamic webpage s which are generated by a web application . Consequently a static webpage displays the same information for all users, from all contexts, subject to modern capabilities of a web server to nere such versions are available and the server is configured to do so. Static web pages are often HTML documents stored as files in the file system and made available by the web server over HTTP . However, loose interpretations of the term could include web pages stored in a database , and could even include pages formatted using a template and served through an application server, as long as the page served is unchanging and presented essentially as stored. Advantages and disadvantages Advantages No programming skills are required to create a static page. Inherently publicly cacheable ie. a cached copy can be shown to anyone . No particular hosting requirements are necessary. Can be viewed directly by a web browser without needing a web server or application server , for example directly from a CD ROM or USB Drive . Disadvantages Any personalization or interactivity has to run client side ie. in the browser , which is restricting. Maintaining large numbers of static pages as files can be impractical without automated tools. WEB consists of two primary programs TANGLE, which produces compilable Pascal programming language Pascal code from the source texts, and WEAVE, which produces nicely formatted, printable documentation using TeX . The surface Web also known as the visible Web or indexable Web is that portion of the World Wide Web that is index search engine indexed by conventional search engine s. The part of the Web that is not reachable this way is called the Deep Web . Syntactic Web is a phrase meant to describe the current, mostly HTML based World Wide Web , in order to distinguish it from the Semantic Web , a concept in which web pages carry information that can be read and understood by machines in a systematic way. The term stems from the contrast between syntax , which is the mechanics of a language used to convey information, and semantics , which is the actual meaning of that information. On a syntactic webpage, which is any document on the web that does not contain special tagging to convey meaning, meaning is difficult to parse by a computer program . An example is a site that gives the weather for any city in the world, in HTML form. Even though the site offers dynamic, database driven information, it is presented in a purely syntactic way. One could imagine a computer program that tried to retrieve this weather information through text parsing or web scraping . Though it would be possible to do, if the creators of the site ever decide to change around the layout or HTML of the site, the computer program would most likely need to be rewritten in some way. In contrast, if the weather site published its data semantically, the program could retrieve that semantic data, and the site s creators could change the look and feel of the site without affecting that retrieval ability.
