Walrus tusk ivory comes from two modified upper canines. The tusks of a Pacific walrus may attain a length of one meter. Walrus teeth are also commercially carved and traded. The average walrus tooth has a rounded, irregular peg shape and is approximately 5cm in length. The tip of a walrus tusk has an tooth enamel enamel coating which is worn away during the animal s youth. Fine longitudinal cracks, which appear as radial cracks in cross section, originate in the cementum and penetrate the dentine. These cracks can be seen throughout the length of the tusk. Whole cross sections of walrus tusks are generally oval with widely spaced indentations. The dentine is composed of two types primary dentine and secondary dentine often called osteodentine . Primary dentine has a classical ivory appearance. Secondary dentine looks marble or oatmeal like. Walrus ivory carving and engraving has been an important folk art for people of the Arctic since prehistoric times, among them the Inuit Inupiaq and Yupik of Greenland and North America and the Chukchi people Chukchi and Koryak of Russia . The Chukchi and Bering Sea Yupik in particular continue to produce ivory. During Soviet Union Soviet times, several walrus carving collectives were established in villages in Chukotka Autonomous Okrug Chukotka , notably Uelen . International trade is, however, somewhat restricted by the CITES Convention on the International Trade of Endangered Species CITES . The folk art of walrus ivory carving has been popular in European Russia since the Middle Ages, with notable schools of walrus ivory carving in Kholmogory and Tobolsk . The Walrus Islands lang ru are a group of craggy coastal islands in the Bering Sea , close to the northern shores of Bristol Bay , Alaska at the entrance to Togiak Bay . They are located 18  km to the east of Hagemeister Island . The Walrus Islands consist of a small group of islands and rocky islets extending to the southeast. The main islands are Summit Island close to the coast , High Island, Crooked Island, Black Rock Island and Round Island. The longest island is Crooked Island with a length of 10  km from north to south. The highest point is 69 m. Administratively these islands belong to the Dillingham Census Area, Alaska . This island group was first explored by Captain James Cook in 1785. The Russian language Russian name Morzh , meaning walrus , was first used by Gavril Sarychev Lt. Sarichev 1826, map 3 , IRN Imperial Russian Navy . Captain Mikhail Dmitrievich Tebenkov Tebenkov applied the name Ostrova Morzhovyye Walrus Islands to the whole group of islands east of Hagemeister Island 1852, map 4 , IRN. Captain Tebenkov also identified Walrus Island with the Ound Island of Capt. Cook 1785, v. 28 p.  431 , RN. The Walrus Islands earned their name because of the big concentration of walrus es in the adjacent waters of these islands every summer, the largest concentration being in Round Island. update date November 2010 The Walrus HULA is a proposed H ybrid U ltra L arge A ircraft. The goal is to create an airship capable of traveling up to 12,000 nautical mile s about 22,000  km in range, while carrying 500 1000 ton s of cargo . In distinct contrast to earlier generation airships, the Walrus HULA will be a heavier than air vehicle and will generate lift through a combination of aerodynamics , thrust vectoring , and gas buoyancy generation and management. As of April 2006, the project is in danger of termination. The 2007 Budget request from DARPA calls for the termination of work on WALRUS after completion of the current Phase I contracts. Citation needed date April 2007 DARPA says that advances in envelope and hull materials, buoyancy and lift control, drag reduction and propulsion have combined to make this concept feasible. Technologies to be investigated in the initial study phase include vacuum air buoyancy compensator tanks, which provide buoyancy control without ballast, and electrostatic atmospheric ion propulsion . The WALRUS could potentially expand and speed up the strategic airlift capability of the United States substantially while simultaneously reducing costs.
