  1. Miss Milligan

unreferenced date April 2008 Infobox Patience Game Name Miss Milligan s Patience AltNames NamedVariants DeckNumber Double DeckType 52 card Family Forty Thieves Miss Milligan is a Patience game Patience game which is played using two decks of playing card s. According to Peter Arnold , author of Card Games for One , this classic game s popularity in England is due to the player s ability to recover from seemingly hopeless positions. Rules First, eight cards are dealt in a row they are bases for eight columns in the game. Any ace that becomes available is put onto the foundations, to be built up by suit. Other cards are built down by alternating color. One card can be moved at a time, although a sequence can also be moved in part or in whole as one unit. When an empty column occurs, only a King or a sequence starting with a King can be placed on it. When no more moves can be made, a new set of eight cards is dealt, each for every column, whether full or empty. Then the game resumes until all possible moves are exhausted, after which a new set of eight cards is placed. This cycle of dealing new cards and making moves continues until the stock is exhausted. After the stock has run out, there is no redeal. However, there is special move called either waiving or weaving, depending on the rule set the player follows. The player can do this special move by picking a card or a sequence of cards up and set it aside this is the dominant rule some rule sets state that only one card can be picked up . The card or sequence can later be placed back into the table at anytime as long as it can be built. Only one card or sequence of cards can be set aside at a time. Computerized solitaire games that include this game include a reserve for this purpose. The game ends when no more useful moves can be made. The game is won if all cards are built onto the foundations. ...   more details

  1. Burlington Fine Arts Club

The Burlington Fine Arts Club was a London gentlemen s club , now dissolved, which was established in 1866 and was disbanded in 1952. It was based at 17 Savile Row . The club had its roots in the informal Fine Arts Club, a gathering of amateur art enthusiasts originally based in Marlborough House in 1856, which moved to South Kensington from 1857. In 1866 they formalised the new club, although informal meetings under the Fine Arts Club banner continued to be held separately until 1874, using the Burlington as its base. The original Burlington clubhouse was on the upper three floors of 177 Piccadilly , between 1866 and 1869, when the club then moved to its Savile Row premises which it retained for the rest of its existence. The club aimed to combine the atmosphere of a typical gentlemen s club for those interested in art, with providing a showcase for amateur artists. Part of the clubhouse doubled up as a regular exhibition venue, the location having been selected for its proximity to Mayfair art dealers. Notable members included James McNeill Whistler , John Ruskin , Dante Gabriel Rossetti , William Michael Rossetti , and Edwin Lutyens . The Second World War proved a terrible strain on the Burlington, its last exhibition having been held just prior to the outbreak of war in 1939. With dwindling membership numbers, the club s committee realised that it could no longer afford the lease on its clubhouse after the war. An attempt was made to raise the funds to move to 34 Great Cumberland Place, but this could not be done, and in late 1951, the club s committee voted for the club to go into liquidation, with this happening the following year. The club s assets were valued at some 14,500, and with most of the members waiving their rights to shares in the club, 13,070, 12s, 5d went into a National Art Collections Fund in commemoration of the Burlington Fine Arts Club. 1. Larsen v Rick Dees Ltd

Brett Larsen v Rick Dees Ltd is a decision of the Supreme Court of New Zealand issued on 1 June 2007. It considered whether a contract for purchase of land is validly completed where settled with a transfer of funds electronically within the time limit stipulated by the parties while notification of this transfer was out of time. Composition of the Court Sian Elias Elias CJ, Peter Blanchard Blanchard , Andrew Tipping Tipping , John Joseph McGrath McGrath and Thomas Gault Gault JJ. The decision of the court was read by Blanchard J, giving the judgement of McGrath J, Gault J, Tipping J who delivered some observations of his own and himself. Elias CJ dissented. Background Mr Larsen agreed to sell ten housing units in Papakura to Rick Dees Ltd. Dissent Elias CJ delivered a brief dissent. She believed that the purchaser s sole duty under the contract was to give the purchase price of the land prior to the time stipulated. She believed that where the purchaser was directed by the vendor to settle funds by a certain time and does so, settlement is complete and is not reliant on notification of the vendor ref Larsen para. 5 ref . The vendor s letter requesting electronic transfer and delaying what was to be a concurrent surrender of the title documents until notification of the receipt of the funds was made by the purchaser was to the vendor s advantage. Performance of the deed requested constituted acceptance by the purchaser that he was waiving his right to have the vendor s strict contractual obligation performed. It did not import a further obligation on the purchaser regarding the method of settlement. Elias CJ rejected the suggestion that notification was necessary for commercial efficacy, especially regarding the possibility that a vendor may require certainty regarding back to back deals of sale and purchase. Here the vendor asked for the electronic transfer of funds. The had established by when the funds needed to be transferred. They provided the deposit slip. The ...   more details

It allowed for the leadership to distribute the tribe s wealth as they deemed in their wisdom and experience would preserve peace and harmony. They would grant access to opportunities to those most deserving or to those who would otherwise be left behind, at their discretion. It is also important to keep the tribe from weakening itself, therefore internal competition is avoided. Furthermore, companies in the Arab world rarely have a no nepotism policy in place, so one can often find a workforce with friends and friends relatives who may or may not be qualified. This takes place in both the public and private sectors. In many Arab countries, such as Saudi Arabia , Kuwait , Qatar and Lebanon, wasta affects hiring and promotion decisions. Its primary competitor in Germany is CashPool . Background Most banks in Germany, while connected through the girocard network, charge ATM usage fees for customers of other banks. Prior to 1998, the charge was fixed to 4,00 Deutsche Mark DM 2,05 or 1 , whichever was higher. However, this agreement was terminated by the Sparkasse n public banks , who jointly operate the largest German ATM network, arguing that the cost of operating ATMs was unfairly laid on them when virtual bank s entered the market. As a consequence, banks now had to deal with different ATM usage charges from other banks but were legally required to make definite quotes to their customers. Most of them simply charged their customers with the estimated maximum fee and pocketed the difference, which dramatically raised the ATM fees for banking customers. Finally, in 1998, the five large German private banks formed Cash Group to counter the bad press resulting from the increase in ATM fees, waiving ATM usage fees within the Group and thus for customers of the Group s member banks. After its formation, other German banks tried to become members of Cash Group but no other bank was accepted by the exsiting members, except new subsidiaries of the so called big five.
