  1. VxD

Unreferenced date September 2007 VxD is the device driver model used in Windows 2.1x Microsoft Windows 386 , the 386 enhanced mode of Windows 3.1x Windows 3.x , and Windows 9x . VxDs have access to the memory of the kernel and all running processes, as well as raw access to the hardware. TOC Design The name VxD is an abbreviation for virtual xxx driver , where xxx is some class of hardware device. It derives from the fact that most drivers had filenames of the form code vxxxd.386 code in Windows 3.1x Windows 3.x . Some examples are vjoyd.386 joystick , vmm.386 memory manager . VxDs usually have the filename extension code .386 code under Windows 3.x and code .vxd code under Windows 95. VxDs written for Windows 3.x can be used under Windows 95 but not vice versa. History Prior to the advent of Windows, DOS applications would either communicate directly with the various pieces of hardware responding to interrupts, reading and writing device memory etc. or go through a DOS device driver . As DOS was not multitasking each application would have exclusive and complete control over the hardware while running. Though Microsoft Windows Windows applications don t often communicate directly with hardware, it was the only way to write Windows drivers, and still is in the real and standard modes of Windows 3.x. Despite the fact that Windows switched from running in real mode to protected mode, direct hardware access and interrupt hooking could still be done because when Windows switched to running in protected mode it kept the single privilege level model used in real mode. This lasted all the way through Windows 9x. Windows 386 and onwards allowed multiple DOS applications to execute ... Model , VxD device drivers can be used under Windows 98 and Windows Me. 1. 32-bit file access

No footnotes date March 2010 32 bit file access refers to the higher performance, protected mode disk caching method introduced in Windows for Workgroups 3.11, which replaced SmartDrive Smartdrv . It bypassed MS DOS and directly accessed the disk, either via the BIOS or preferably 32 bit disk access Windows native protected mode disk drivers . This feature was a backport from the then unreleased Windows 95 , as suggested by Microsoft s advertisements for Windows for Workgroups 3.11 the 32 bit file system from our Chicago project . With the introduction of 32 bit file access and Long File Names in Windows 95, DOS was reduced to the role of a boot loader for Windows. It was implemented using the File Allocation Table Long File Names .28VFAT.2C LFNs.29 VFAT , VCACHE, and IFSHLP.SYS IFSMgr VxD drivers. Also, it should not be confused with 32 bit disk access . Although both technologies are similar, 32 bit disk access also known as FastDisk pre dates Windows for Workgroups 3.11. 32 bit file access provided a 32 bit code path for Windows to directly access the disk bus by intercepting the MS DOS Int 21H services while remaining in 386 protected mode and at CPU speeds, rather than handling the Int 21H services in real mode by MS DOS. 32 bit disk access relatively offers less performance and is less likely to work on many computers than 32 bit file access. 32 bit file access does not need 32 bit disk access. 1. Windows startup process

The Windows Startup Process is the process by which Microsoft s Microsoft Windows Windows series of operating system s initializes. DOS based Windows Windows 1.x 2.x In Windows versions 1.01 to Windows 386, the system was loaded when WIN.COM was executed. It then loaded win100.bin win200.bin and win100.ovl win200.ovl, along with the configuration settings file WIN.INI . The default shell is the MS DOS Executive . The modules GDI.EXE, KERNEL.EXE and USER.EXE, fonts, and the various device drivers such as comm.drv, mouse.drv, keyboard.drv are incorporated in win100.bin win200.bin and win100.ovl win200.ovl. Windows 3.x 9x In Windows 3.1x Windows 3.x and Windows 9x 95 98 ME , the boot loader phase is handled by MS DOS . During the boot phase, the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys are executed, along with the configuration settings files WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI . Virtual device drivers are also loaded in the startup process they are most commonly loaded from the registry HKLM System CurrentControlSet Services VxD or from the SYSTEM.INI file. When all system configuration files and device drivers have been loaded, the 16 bit modules, krnl386.exe, gdi.exe, and user.exe, are loaded, then the 32 bit DLLs kernel32.dll, gdi32.dll, and user32.dll are loaded. The 32 bit VxD message server Msgsrv32 starts Mprexe.exe, which is responsible for loading the network logon client such as Client for Microsoft Networks, Microsoft Family Logon or Windows Logon . When a user is logging on to Windows, the startup sound is played, the shell usually Explorer.exe is loaded from the boot section of the SYSTEM.INI file, and startup items are loaded. In all DOS based versions of Windows except ME, it is also possible to load Windows by booting to a DOS prompt and typing win . There are some command line switches that can be used with the Win command with the d switch, Windows boots to safe mode, and with the d n switch, Windows boots to safe mode with networking. The latter switch only works properly wi ...   more details
