Otheruses Deleted image removed Image Dixon Musica.jpg thumb The controversial Musica statue in Nashville, Tennessee, Nashville. 220px Musica is a bronze statue unveiled in 2003 that sits in a grassy knoll at the center of a roundabout traffic rotary where Division Street meets 17th Avenue South known as the Music Row Roundabout or Buddy Killen Circle across from the Owen Bradley Park in the Music Row area of Nashville, Tennessee. It was built as part of an urban renewal project for the Music Row neighborhood. Composition Musica is Alan LeQuire s largest sculpture commission to date, and currently the largest sculpture group in the United States. It features nine nude figures, male and female, dancing in a circular composition approximately 38 feet 11.5 m tall. There are five figures which spring forth from the base. Four more rise up in the center floating above the others. The pinnacle of the statue is a female holding a tambourine. The scale of each figure is fourteen to fifteen feet, or more than twice life size. The dancers and part of the base are cast in bronze. The other part of the base is composed of massive natural limestone boulders, which are prevalent in the Nashville area. Much of the work on the statue was actually done at a foundry in Lander, Wyoming, with the pieces transported and assembled onsite. It weighs approximately 10 tons. Vision LeQuire writes of his work Dance is the physical expression of music and the piece is intended to convey that feeling to the viewer in a composition which is simple, exuberant and celebratory. The theme of the sculpture is music ..., and the title Musica suggests this since it refers to all the arts of the muses. In music history , musica reservata also musica secreta is either a style or a performance practice in a cappella vocal music of the latter half of the 16th century, mainly in Italy and southern Germany , involving refinement, exclusivity, and intense emotional expression of sung text. 1. Musica poetica

other uses Musica poetica was a term commonly applied to the art of composing music in sixteenth and seventeenth century German schools and universities. Its first known use was in the Rudimenta Musicae Planae Wittenberg 1533 of Nicolaus Listenius. Previously, music had been divided into musica theoretica and musica practica , which were categorised with the quadrivium and trivium education trivium , respectively. Since music of the time primarily meant vocal music, it was natural for theorists to make analogies between the composition of music and the composition of oratory or poetry. Hence, the term musica poetica . Analogies between music and the rhetorical arts were made on several levels. Gallus Dressler 1563 suggested to liken the structure of a musical composition with that of a speech, as outlined in Classical antiquity Classical sources, dividing it into such sections as exordium , medium rhetoric medium and finis literally, beginning , middle and end . Another kind of analogy was to liken the rules or grammar of composition with those of speech, as illustrated by Joachim Burmeister s use of tauto pia to label consecutive fifths and octaves which were generally regarded as illegal except in special circumstances . Most significantly, though, special melodic, harmonic, or technical devices in music began to be associated with the figures of Classical antiquity Classical oratory for example, a rising or falling sequence in music was usually called climax in the literature of musica poetica . However, it must be pointed out that such analogies were not always direct terms used in musica poetica do not always correspond equivalently to their rhetorical counterparts for example ... to such verbal ideas as going up with rising musical phrases known as anabasis or ascensus in musica poetica . A knowledge of both Classical rhetoric and musica poetica can greatly enhance the listener ...
