Biography Together with his father, Niccol , tyrant of Citt di Castello, and his brothers, who were all soldiers of fortune, he instituted a new type of infantry armed with sword and pike to resist the German men at arms, and also a corps of mounted infantry armed with arquebuses. Vitellozzo took service with Florence against Pisa , and later with the French in Apulia in 1496 and with the Orsini faction against Pope Alexander VI . In 1500 Vitellozzo and the Orsini made peace with the pope, and the latter s son Cesare Borgia , being determined to crush the petty tyrants of Romagna and consolidate papal power in that province, took the condottieri into his service. Vitellozzo distinguished himself in many engagements, but in 1501 he advanced against Florence, moved as much by a desire to avenge his brother Paolo, who while in the service of the republic had been suspected of treachery and put to death 1499 , as by Cesare s orders. While Borgia was actually negotiating with the republic, Vitelli seized Arezzo . Life Vitelli was born in 1531 in Citt di Castello of Captain Alessandro Vitellozzi, signore of Amatrice , and Angela di Troilo Rossi, and educated at the University of Padua . He was ordained a cleric of Citt di Castello and appointed bishop there March 20, 1554, an office he would resign in 1560. He went to Rome in February 1556 and was created cardinal deacon March 15, 1557, receiving the deaconry of Santi Sergio e Bacco Ss. Sergio e Bacco on March 24. He opted for the deaconry of Santa Maria in Campitelli S. Maria in Portico Octaviae in March 1559 and that of Santa Maria in Via Lata in November 1564. Niccol Vitelli 1414 1486 was an Italian condottiero of the Vitelli family from Citt di Castello . The son of Giovanni Vitelli and Maddalena dei Marchesi di Petriolo, he was orphaned and grew under the tutelage of his uncle VitellozzoVitelliVitellozzo who introduced him into the political life of the area. He was podest in some of the major Italian cities, such as Florence , Siena , Genoa ans Perugia . He frequently clashed with the Popes Pope Paul II Paul II and Sixtus IV for the rule of Citt di Castello. In 1474 he was besieged in the city by Giuliano della Rovere future Pope Julius II and Federico III da Montefeltro . He had to cease the city, in which he however returned in 1482 after ravaging for years the castles and estates in the area.
