Praise for Hilary Hahn s Schoenberg & Sibelius Whether we are Schoenberg friends or detractors, all of us need this recording. For Hahn s hard work, A plus technique and dedication have taken her far beyond those treacherous, serially ordered notes, spattered over the score like ants in disarray. She s made them her own, found their heart, and reconnected the 12 tone Schoenberg with the late Romantic composer he used to be and, deep down, always remained . No other recording can beat this disc for richness and clarity of sound, for the soloist s passion, or the orchestra s glow. Esa Pekka Salonen conducts the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and they mean every note just as much as Hahn does. Few recorded accounts of the Sibelius have been as empathetic, as Scandinavian, as this. Time and again woodwinds glower through orchestral textures speckled with details usually kept hidden. The ViolinConcerto in A minor , Op. 82, by Alexander Glazunov is one of his most popular compositions. Written in 1904, the concerto was dedicated to violinist Leopold Auer , who gave the first performance at a Russian Musical Society concert in Saint Petersburg St. Petersburg on February 15, 1905. The British premiere of the concerto followed just over a year later, under the direction of Henry Wood Sir Henry Wood and with Mischa Elman as soloist. The violinconcerto is quite representative of Glazunov s technically brilliant style. Like many other concerti, the work contains three movements Moderato Andante sostenuto Allegro The slow second movement is seamlessly inserted by the composer into the middle of the first movement, which is an original and rare structural peculiarity of this composition. The main cadenza at the end of the second movement was composed by Glazunov himself. It utilizes extensive double stopping technique and is considered one of the hardest parts of the concerto. The concerto is written as a single continuous 21 minute long piece and is performed without any pauses between movements. Karol Szymanowski s ViolinConcerto No. 1 , Op. 35, was written in 1916 while the composer was in Zarudzie, Ukraine Zarudzie , Ukraine . Pawe Kocha ski advised Szymanowski on the fine point of violin technique during the composition of the concerto, and he later wrote the cadenza . The work is dedicated to Kocha ski. The likely inspiration for the concerto was Noc Majowa, a poem by the Polish poet Tadeusz Mici ski . The concerto doesn t follow or duplicate the poem, yet Szymanowski s ecstatic, sumptuous music is an ideal companion to Mici ski s language poem All the birds pay tribute to me for today I wed a goddess. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart s ViolinConcerto No. 1 in B flat major K. 207 was originally supposed to have been composed in 1775 when Mozart was 19 , along with the other four wholly authentic violin concerti. However, analysis of handwriting and the manuscript paper on which the concerto was written suggest that the actual date of composition might have been 1773. It has a common three movement structure. Movements are Allegro Moderato Adagio Presto. in the usual fast slow fast structure. The concerto is full of brilliant passage work with running sixteenth notes and is generally characterized by high spirits. The concert Rondo No.1 in B flat, K. 269 for violin and orchestra, is also connected to this concerto. It was intended to replace the finale movement, and was composed to fulfill the recommendation of Antonio Brunetti, a violinist in Salzburg at the time. Nonetheless, the concerto is typically performed with the original finale, and the K. 269 Rondo remains a separate concert piece. B la Bart k s ViolinConcerto No. 1 , BB 48a was written around the years 1907&ndash 1908, but only published in 1956, after the composer s death. It was premiered on May 30, 1958 in Basel , Switzerland . It strays from the path of the traditional concerto, having two rather than three movement music movements Andante sostenuto Allegro giocoso Bart k had planned a third movement, but never wrote it. Bart k used the Andante as the first of the Two Portraits , opus number op. 5, representing Stefi Geyer . The concerto was dedicated, as was Othmar Schoeck s concerto for the same instrument, to the violinist Stefi Geyer , with whom Bart k was in love. Geyer could not reciprocate Bart k s feelings and rejected the concerto. Both kept copies locked in a drawer. It was revived after both Bart k and Geyer had died. Geyer s copy of the manuscript was bequeathed to Paul Sacher to be performed by him and Hans Heinz Schneeberger . The concerto was later championed by David Oistrakh , the luscious toned Soviet violinist. Acclaimed recordings include Oistrakh with Gennady Rozhdestvensky conducting for opulent romanticism, Maxim Vengerov for virtuosic fire, and Gy rgy Pauk for authenticity. For many years, Isaac Stern with Leonard Bernstein conducting was the classic recording.
