Evolution The annual fair s of Paris at St. Germain and St. Laurent had developed theatrical variety entertainments mixing plays, acrobatics acrobat ic displays, and pantomime s, typically featuring vaudevilles. Gradually these features began to invade the professional stage. The Querelle des Bouffons War of the clowns , a dispute amongst theatrical factions in Paris in the 1750s, in part reflects the rivalry of this form, as it evolved into op ra comique , with the Italian opera buffa . Immigration Beck immigrated to the United States from Liptovsk Mikul , Austria , today Slovakia in 1883 with a troupe of actors. He worked as a waiter in a Chicago beer garden , then went to San Francisco with the Schiller Vaudeville Company in the early 1890s. Beck became friends with the owner of the Orpheum Theatre San Francisco Orpheum Theatre in San Francisco, and when it was bought by Morris Meyerfeld in 1899, he helped Morris expand by acquiring other theaters. By 1905, Beck was running the organization, which extended from Chicago to San Francisco. In 1910 he formed for the Orpheum, the United Booking Offices , Kohl and Castle and others the Beck Butt Circuit linking America and Europe, joining forces with Alfred Butt , of the Palace in London and Alhambra in Glasgow, founder chairman of the Variety Theatre Controlling Company in Britain thus creating a booking organisation to engage performers who would have three years without playing the same theater twice. The Vaudeville Theater Ambush March 11, 1884 was an ambush conducted against police officer lawman and gunfighter gunman Ben Thompson and his friend, gunman and sometimes lawman King Fisher , carried out by enemies to Thompson. It took place at the Vaudeville Variety Theater in San Antonio, Texas . Background King Fisher and Ben Thompson were both noted gunmen of the Old West . Thompson had several killings to his credit by 1884, which included the 1882 killing of a popular theater owner named Jack Harris, in San Antonio. That shooting had been ruled self defense . Thompson had been appointed Chief of Police for the city of Austin, Texas , a job in which he had been extremely successful, and for which he was extremely popular in Austin.
