They lie south of the island of Barra , for which they are named. The group consists of nine island s, and numerous rocks. Many of the islands are extremely small. Only the largest island Vatersay , which is now linked by causeway to Barra, remains inhabited. Berneray, Barra, Scotland Berneray also known as Barra Head , Pabbay, Barra, Scotland Pabbay , Sandray and Mingulay have been inhabited in the past.     Image Heaval top.jpg thumb Top of Heaval, looking out into the Atlantic Heaval is the highest hill on the island of Barra , Scotland . It is 383 metres tall and is located 1.5km northeast of Castlebay . It is most easily ascended from the south east, from the top of a 102 m road pass about 1 km north east of Castlebay. There is signposted car park nearby. About half way up the ridge, there is a white statue of the Virgin and Child. Near the top, the ridge becomes steep, but any difficulties can be bypassed on the south side. The two other hills on Barra with Marilyn hill more than 150 metres of topographic prominence reascent are Ben Tangaval 333 m in the west, and Ben Cliad 202 m in the north. Another hill, Theisabhal Mor 190 m is on Vatersay , which is linked to Barra by causeway .     orphan date March 2010 F is Bharraigh begun in 1981 with the mission to promote, encourage, foster and develop the practice and study of the Scottish Gaelic language , literature, music, drama and culture on the islands of Barra and Vatersay . The F is movement came about when a group of parents and other individuals on the Isle of Barra became concerned that local traditions were dying out and that island children were not being taught traditional music in the context of formal education. This first F is, which means festival in Gaelic, laid down the path for many more F isean, inspired by the success of the first F is, to spring up around Scotland with each one community led and tailored to local needs. Today there are 41 F isean in Scotland. In 2007, F is Bharraigh launched BarraFest Live the Edge , a weekend festival of traditional and modern Scottish music held on the Tangasdale machair .
