- Variome
The Variome is the whole set of genetic variation s found in populations of species that have gone through a relatively short evolution change. For example, among humans, about 1 in every 1,200 nucleotide base s differ. However, as the human species diverged only 10,000 years ago, this variation rate is comparatively small. In practice, the variome can be the sum of the single nucleotide polymorphisms SNPs of the population. Variomics is the study of variome and a branch of bioinformatics . Projects There are a number of international project studying the human variome, including the International HapMap Project and the Human Variome Project HVP . The HapMap Project aims to identify and catalog genetic similarities and differences among humans. The HVP aims to collect data on all human genetic variation. Inception The HVP concept was conceived by Richard Cotton Professor Richard Cotton , a leader in the field of human genetic variation . His group, the Genomic Disorders Research Centre , based at the University of Melbourne and St Vincent s Hospital, Melbourne St. Vincent s Hospital , has established a consortium that covers genomic variation and its health implications in a comprehensive form. This consortium has encouraged the creation and supported many of the 571 gene specific variation database s currently available on the internet .
