Frijda, The Emotions. Cambridge UK Cambridge University Press, 1986. p. 207 ref However, the term is also used to characterize and categorize specific emotions. For example, the emotions popularly referred to as negative , such as anger and fear , have negative valence . Happiness Joy has positive valence . Positively valenced emotions are evoked by positively valenced events, objects, or situations. The term is also used about the hedonic tone of feeling s, affect , certain behavior s for example, approach and avoidance , goal attainment or non attainment, and conformity with or violation of Norm sociology norms . Ambivalence can be viewed as conflict between positive and negative valence carriers. Citation needed date September 2007 History of usage The term entered English usage in psychology with the translation from German in 1935 of works of Kurt Lewin . Ambivalence has a longer history. Citation needed date September 2007 Criterion for emotion Valence is one criterion used in some definitions of emotion. The possible absence of valence is cited as a reason to exclude Surprise emotion surprise , viewed as the startle reaction , from the list of emotions, though some would include it. 1. University of Valence

The University of Valence was founded 26 July, 1452 , by letters patent from the Dauphin Louis, afterwards Louis XI of France , in a move to develop the city of Valence, Dr me Valence , then part of his domain of Dauphin . It existed until the French Revolution . History Pope Pius II approved its erection in the Bull of 3 May, 1459. In February, 1541, the Canon Pierre Morel opened a college for thirteen poor students. In the sixteenth century Valence was famous for its teaching of law, entrusted to Italian professors or to those who had studied in Italy. The Portuguese jurist, Govea , taught at Valence, 1554 55 the French jurist, Jacques Cujas 1522 90 , from December 1557 to 1559 and Fran ois Hotman from the end of 1562 until August 1568. It was at the instigation of Hotman that Bishop Montluc obtained from Charles IX of France the Edict of 8 April, 1565, which united the University of Grenoble with Valence. Cujas again filled a chair at Valence, August, 1567 75 he had among his auditors Scaliger , the historian Jacques Auguste de Thou , the jurist Pithou . The university was a Protestant centre. Hotman was a determined Protestant Cujas passed from Protestantism to Catholicism , but it is doubtful if his conversion was inspired entirely from religious motives. Consequently in 1575 Montluc founded at Valence a college of Jesuit s, but this was of short duration. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the University of Valence was of only minor importance. From 1738 to 1764 its transfer to Grenoble was contemplated but this project was abandoned. 1. Valence effect

The valence effect of prediction is the tendency for people to simply overestimate the likelihood of good things happening rather than bad things. Valence psychology Valence refers to the positive or negative emotion al charge something has. This finding has been corroborated by dozens of studies. In one straightforward experiment, all other things being equal, participants assigned a higher probability to picking a card that had a smiling face on its reverse side than one which had a frowning face. ref cite web url http www.google.com url?sa t&ct res&cd 2&url http 3A 2F 2Fwww.sias.org.uk 2Fdata 2Fpapers 2FBehaviouralFinance 2FDownloadPDF&ei Srw4RpzQLpPEiwGhu7TkDA&usg AFrqEze1605hIFtf9inCo5FHPZZTeq DTQ&sig2 lg65w26FFzNGNf232y9ToA title Making Actuaries Less Human Lessons from Behavioral Finance format PDF author Nigel Taylor date 2000 01 18 publisher The Staple Inn Actuarial Society accessdate 2009 03 16 ref In addition, some have reported a valence effect in attributional bias attribution when we overpredict the likelihood of positive events happening to ourselves relative to others. See self serving bias . The outcome of valence effects may be called wishful thinking . However, in certain situations, the valence effect may actually alter the event in some way so that it indeed results in a positive outcome. For examples, in some cases generals have morale roused up their soldiers to a point where they were able to emerge victorious in battle.
