History Since the Middle Ages there has been a thermal spa there, at one time a hunting lodge of the Dukes of W rttemberg. In the 19th Century, the spa was acquired by Pastor Johann Christoph Blumhardt who used it as a center for his ministry of healing and evangelism. His son Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt took over the spa and ministry until his own his death in 1919. In 1921, the Blumhardt family passed the spa complex on to the Herrnhuter Br der Unit t or Moravian Church . Following World War II, Bad Boll became the western European headquarters of that church body and continued as such until the re unification of Germany in 1989. The Diakonie of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in W rttemberg assumed control of the spa in 2005 although the Moravian Church Moravian Congregation still continues to worship in its chapel. Jacob Boll 28 May 1828 29 September 1880 was a Switzerland Swiss naturalist and entomologist especially noted for his exploration of Texas . Boll was born 1828 in W renlos , Switzerland , and educated in Switzerland and Germany . Established as a naturalist he turned his attention to microlepidoptera and established contact with Philipp Christoph Zeller . Around 1860 the Boll family travelled to Texas and joined the La Reunion Dallas La R union socialist utopian community.They returned to Switzerland after a few years. In 1869 he met with Louis Agassiz at Harvard, proceeding to Texas to collect animals for the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology . Returning to Switzerland he became a professional collector, working for Eduard D mle and the Swiss government. Similar arrangements were made with Agassiz and in 1870 he collected insects in New England . Boll settled permanently in the U.S.A. after his wife Henriette Humbel s death in 1873. He lived in Dallas . In 1878 he collected Permian vertebrate fossils in northwest Texas for Edward Drinker Cope of Philadelphia. These collections are now in the American Museum of Natural History . Boll published a number of papers in botany, entomology, and geology. The Boll case was heard before the International Court of Justice in 1958 and remains the only case in which a Convention drafted by the Hague Conference on Private International Law was the principal subject of interpretation by a court with worldwide jurisdiction. In Boll the Netherlands sued Sweden in regards to the guardianship of a child, Marie Elizabeth Boll. Marie was the daughter of a Dutch seafarer whose Swedish wife had died. Prior to the mother s death, the child lived in Sweden with her mother but, under the existing rules of nationality during that period, was only entitled to the Dutch nationality of her father. In spite of Marie s residence in Sweden, Dutch authorities assigned her guardianship according to their own procedures. Swedish authorities overrode the Dutch decisions and placed the child under a protective public care order based on the fact that Marie was residing in Sweden with maternal grandparents. The International Court of Justice analyzed the Hague Convention of 1902 relating to the settlement of guardianship of minors and found that the concept of guardianship should be narrowly interpreted. As such, the 1902 Convention did not prevent institutions of public law, in this case the Swedish order, from intervening to take the child into care or protective upbringing. The practical effect of this decision was that it allowed a state to void the guardianship orders of another state with presumptive jurisdiction by enacting public laws. In response to the Boll decision, the Hague Conference , which had recently created a small Permanent Bureau, responded by drafting a new Convention in the Conference s Ninth Diplomatic Session in 1960, the Hague Convention of 1961 concerning the powers of authorities and the law applicable in respect of the protection of minors which included expanded language regarding measures directed to the protection of the child s person or property, which was specifically intended to apply to both a state s own private ... more details
