No two versions of the king lists known as the Pictish Chronicle give exactly the same version of his name. ref Early Sources , p. cxxvii. ref Ferat, or Uurad in Pictish language Pictish , is the most common reading, but Feradach may be intended. ref In the case of Alp n II of the Picts Alp n , Uuroid is read as Feradach. ref Thomas Owen Clancy s interpretation of the Drosten Stone would make Ferat one of only two Pictish monarchs, the other being Caustant n of the Picts Caustant n mac Fergusa , whose name is read on a Pictish stone . One version of the origin tale of St Andrews states that it was written by one Thana son of Dudabrach, at Meigle , in the reign of Pherath son of Bergeth . ref Early Sources , p. 266, note 2. ref His sons may have included Bridei VI of the Picts Bridei , Ciniod II of the Picts Ciniod , and Drest X of the Picts Drest , who contested for power in Pictland with kin groups led by Bridei VII of the Picts Bruide son of Fokel , and Kenneth MacAlpin Cin ed mac Ailp n . In academic contexts it is sometimes called St Vigeans 1 . pictures would be good added, Aug 2008 The Drosten Stone is a Class 2 cross slab a flat rectangular stone with a cross carved on one side and symbols on the other. The stone is unusual in having a non ogham inscription. Image Pictish.stone.St.Vigeans.inscription.jpg thumb left 200px The Drosten Stone, showing the inscription. The inscription is read as blockquote DROSTEN br IPEUORET br E TTFOR br CUS blockquote clear Thomas Owen Clancy has interpreted the text as Goidelic languages Goidelic , giving Drosten, i r Uoret ett Forcus Drosten, in the time of Uoret, and Forcus . Clancy notes three possibilities for the origin of the stone. One is as a monument to a noble or ecclestiastic called Drosten, a common Picts Pictish name related to Tristan, who died in the reign of Uoret and Fergus. The second possibility is a dedication to the popular Pictish Saint Drostan , or perhaps to Saints Drostan and Fergus. The final possibility noted by Clancy is that Drosten and Fergus had the stone made. Clancy believes the stone should be dated to the reign of the Pictish king Uurad i.e. Uoret 839&ndash 842 , again, an unusual feature in that Pictish stones can rarely be so precisely dated.
