File Mill hill observatory 2009.JPG thumb 300px The observatory in March 2009 The University of London Observatory at Mill Hill in London is a teaching astronomical observatory which is part of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at University College London . The Observatory was opened on 8 October 1929 by the Astronomer Royal Frank Watson Dyson to house the 24 inch reflector from Dr W.E. Wilson s observatory at Daramona, Ireland which was donated to the University of London after his death. An 8 inch refractor was installed in 1931 following its donation to the university by H.R. Fry of Barnett the previous year. In July 1938 the Observatory was expanded to accommodate the 24 inch 18 inch twin refractor that had been removed from the Radcliffe Observatory at Oxford in 1934. In 1951 University College London UCL took over management of the Observatory from the University of London and several expansions over the next ten years added library, lecture, and laboratory space. The Wilson telescope was retired in 1974 to the Merseyside Museums, and replaced the following year with a new 24 inch Ritchey Chr tien telescope Ritchey Chr tien Cassegrain reflector which was named after the former director of the Observatory, Professor C.W. Allen. In addition to the these three, the observatory currently also houses four modern telescopes a Celestron 14 inch Schmidt Cassegrain , a Meade 7 inch Maksutov telescope Maksutov Cassegrain , and two Meade 10 inch Schmidt Cassegrain s. Others will go on to completely separate careers in merchant banks, consultancies and law firms. They are currently thriving as a result of the current boom in swing dance, led by such venues as the 100 Club , Oxford Street . History The University of London Big Band is the largest group in the University of London Jazz Society. Formed in Autumn 2002, the Band represents the majority of the individual University colleges. Their steadily rising reputation for musicianship has allowed the Big Band to build on its early successes highlights included the King s College London King s College Law Ball held at London s famously lavish Savoy Hotel as well as events held for the Royal Air Force RAF . 2004 was a busy year for the band, with regular gigs ranging from the expansion into the provision of small band jazz for private functions, to full band events at weddings, bars and balls. cleanup date May 2009 tone date May 2009 The http www.ulcc.ac.uk University of London Computer Centre ULCC was founded in 1968, and was the first supercomputer facility established in London for the purpose of scientific and educational research by all of the colleges of the University of London . ULCC initially provided large scale Control Data Corporation CDC based facilities, then from 1982 to 1991 a national Cray vector supercomputing service, and, latterly, a 6 processor, 4 Gbyte Convex Computer Convex C3860 supercomputer with a Convex C3200 front end. ULCC also became a major site for national and international network connections in the UK. It ran the Network Operations and Service Centre for the JANET Internet Protocol Service JIPS the largest of the JANET network centres and various international links and relays on behalf of UKERNA . Since the closure of its supercomputer service in the 1990s, ULCC has focused on providing IT services across the educational and public sector, as well as undertaking research work in fields such as digital preservation and e learning . In 2009, ULCC vacated its historic premises of 40 years at 20 Guilford Street, a building that was custom built in the 1960s specifically to house some of the earliest supercomputers in the UK. It is now based within the central university at Senate House. ULCC continues to develop innovative IT services for a wide range of organisations mainly in the UK but with increasing work from overseas.
