Eck, a staunch defender of Roman Catholic Church Roman Catholic doctrine, had challenged Karlstadt to a public debate concerning the doctrines of free will and divine grace grace . The Leipzig Debate took place at Pleissenburg Pleissenburg Castle now the location of the city hall in Leipzig , and lasted from June to July 1519. Martin Luther arrived in Leipzig and joined the debate in July 1519, at the invitation of Eck. Luther and Eck expanded the terms of the debate, to include matters such as purgatory , the sale of indulgences , the need for and methods of penance , and the legitimacy of papal authority . A joint verdict on the outcome of the debate was to be issued by the University of Erfurt and the University of Paris , but the theological faculty of Erfurt recused itself. The faculty in Paris delivered a negative verdict on Luther s writings in 1521, but made no direct reference to the debate in Leipzig itself. It was built as the Klosterkirche St. Pauli for the Dominican monastery in Leipzig and, when the monastery was dissolved, it became the Universit tskirche St. Pauli or Unikirche , the university church for the University of Leipzig . It survived the war practically unscathed unlike the Augusteum Leipzig Augusteum next to it but was dynamited in 1968 during the communist regime by a decision of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany SED led city administration and the university administration. Protestors against the blasting operation were arrested. In the 1990s the rebuilding of the church was discussed but obstructed by the university. However, the new buildings at the University s main campus which are currently under construction are inspired by the form and shape of the old church. It was the original site of the University of Leipzig . History It was built between 1831 and 1836 to plans by Albert Geutebr ck , though its facade referred back to a neoclassical architecture classicist design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The building had, however, already reached its full capacity by the 1870s since the university had grown due to major urban expansion in this period. The building was generously rebuilt and expanded from 1892 to 1897 by the architect Arwed Rossbach . The Augusteum had originally only had a front onto the Augustusplatz, but due to the demolition of the Paulinum University of Leipzig Paulinum could now receive a south wing known as the Johanneum 1895 , a middle wing known as the Albertinum 1896 and a west wing known as the Paulinum 1896 . The renovation also altered the building s style to fit in better with other buildings on the Augustusplatz, with Neo Renaissance and Neo Gothic facades being added to the Paulinerkirche and Augusteum to plans by Rossbach. The Panometer opened in 2003 and was created by the Austrian born artist Yadegar Asisi, who coined the name as a portmanteau of panorama and gasometer . The gasometer was built in 1909, under Hugo Licht , and was in operation until 1977. It has a diameter of convert 57 m and a total height of convert 49 m , including the cupola with lantern.
