Unreferenced date February 2009 The Office of the InspectorGeneral of the Department of State is the branch of the U.S. State Department that investigates waste, fraud, abuse and mismanagement. The InspectorGeneral of the Department of State IG office conducts audits, inspections, and reports on the activities of the embassies and consulates to ensure that foreign policy is being effectively executed. Other matters within the State Department that involve purely criminal activity are usually investigated by DSS Diplomatic Security Service . In 1978, with the passage of the IG act by Congress, all Federal departments not already having an IG office were mandated to create one. The U.S. State Department was one of the last Federal departments to create an IG office. Fact date February 2009 Predating the State IG office by many years was the Department s law enforcement investigative arm DSS, and its predecessors SY and the Bureau of Secret Intelligence 1916 . Fact date February 2009 Most other Department IG offices emphasize the law enforcement aspect of their duties above the auditing functions. The opposite could said to be true for the State IG office, which is made up largely of former Foreign Service Officer s, and others hired as auditors and program inspectors. Only about 10 to 15 Special Agent s are employed by the State IG office, compared to over 1,600 for State s DSS. Fact date February 2009 A large portion of the State IG function is dedicated to security oversight inspections and audits of Embassy programs.
