Biography He was born at Radipole , near Weymouth, Dorset Weymouth , Dorset . He entered the Royal Navy in 1857, served in the 1868 Expedition to Abyssinia Abyssinian campaign of 1868 , and was employed for a considerable time in the suppression of the slave trade in Africa East African slave trade . The experience thus obtained led to his being selected to command an expedition sent by the Royal Geographical Society in 1873, to assist David Livingstone Dr Livingstone . He was also instructed to make independent explorations, guided by Livingstone s advice. Soon after the departure of the expedition from Zanzibar , Livingstone s servants were met bearing the dead body of their master. Cameron s two European companions turned back, but he continued his march and reached Ujiji , on Lake Tanganyika , in February 1874, where he found and sent to England Livingstone s papers. Cameron spent some time determining the true form of the south part of the lake, and solved the question of its outlet by the discovery of the Lukuga River . From Tanganyika he struck westward to Nyangwe , the Arab town on the Lualaba River Lualaba previously visited by Livingstone. This river Cameron rightly believed to be the main stream of the Congo River Congo , and he endeavoured to procure canoes to follow it down. In this he was unsuccessful, owing to his refusal to countenance slavery , and he therefore turned south west. After tracing the Congo Zambezi watershed for hundreds of miles he reached Bihe and finally arrived at the coast on 28 November 1875, being the first European to cross equatorial Africa from sea to s ...   more details

The Congo Pedicle road at one time referred to as the Zaire Pedicle road crosses the DR Congo Congolese territory of the Congo Pedicle and was constructed by and is maintained by Zambia to connect its Copperbelt Province Copperbelt and Luapula Province s. Both the road and the territory may be referred to as the Pedicle . For thirty years, the Congo Pedicle road has been a major development studies development issue in northern Zambia. ref name TOZB This article covers the road, for details of how the territory came in to being, see Congo Pedicle . The need for a crossing of the Pedicle From its inception, the Pedicle was crossed by those travelling between the Luapula River Luapula , Lake Mweru Mweru and Lake Bangweulu Bangweulu areas and the south, especially after the railway reached Ndola in 1906. But there were other routes. In the 19th Century the more travelled trade route from those areas had been to the south end of Lake Tanganyika , by boat up the lake to Ujiji , overland to Dar Es Salaam , and by boat to Zanzibar . Completion of the Dar es Salaam railway to Kigoma near Ujiji in 1914, coupled with a lake steamer service to Mpulungu near Mbala Abercorn made it even more viable. The Copperbelt Development of the Copperbelt from the late 1920s had a big impact on overland routes. Copperbelt towns including Lubumbashi Elizabethville now Lubumbashi in the Congolese province of Katanga Province Katanga became the markets and chief source of supplies and employment for the Luapula Mweru Bangweulu region, and in turn their large fisheries the largest in Northern Rhodesia Zambia supplied the growing Copperbelt labour force. ref name Gordon David Gordon Decentralized Despots or Contingent Chiefs Comparing Colonial Chiefs in Northern Rhodesia and the Belgian ...   more details

Image Colonial Africa 1914 map.png thumb right 300px Map showing almost complete British control of the Cape to Cairo route, 1914 The Cape to Cairo Road or Pan African Highway , sometimes called the Great North Road in sub Saharan Africa, was an imperial dream envisioned by the British Empire that would see a road stretch the length of Africa , from Cape Town to Cairo , similar to the Pan American Highway . It will become a reality when the Cairo Cape Town Highway project is completed. History From about 1890, stalwarts of the British Empire had a grand vision for a road that would stretch across the continent from south to north, running through the British colonies of the time, such as the Union of South Africa , Southern Rhodesia Southern and Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland , Kenya , Sudan and Egypt . One of the main proponents of the route was Cecil John Rhodes , the man after whom Rhodesia was named, though his preference was for a railway. German East Africa Tanganyika , now Tanzania was a gap in the British territories, but Rhodes in particular felt that Germany ought to be a natural ally. Shortly before his death he had persuaded the German Kaiser to allow access through his colony for the Cape to Cairo telegraph line which was built as far north as Ujiji but never completed . ref name NRJ http www.nrzam.org.uk NRJ V5N1 V5N1.htm The Northern Rhodesia Journal online at NRZAM S.
