Unreferenced date December 2009 The Treaty of Rheinfelden Lang de Rheinfelder Hausordnung was the first Habsburg order of succession concluded on June 1, 1283 at the Free imperial city Imperial City of Rheinfelden . Rudolph I of Germany Rudolph of Habsburg had been chosen King of the Romans in 1273 and had defeated his rival Ottokar II of Bohemia who was killed at the 1278 Battle on the Marchfeld . Ottokar s son Wenceslaus II of Bohemia Wenceslaus II retained the Kingdom of Bohemia Bohemian Kingdom , while Ottokar s estates in Archduchy of Austria Austria , Duchy of Styria Styria , Duchy of Carinthia Carinthia and March of Carniola Carniola fell back to the Holy Roman Empire . King Rudolph had reached an agreement with the Prince elector s to award these territories to his sons and at the Diet of Augsburg in 1282 Albert I of Germany Albert I and his brother Rudolf II, Duke of Austria Rudolph II jointly and severally received Austria, Styria, Carniola and the Windic March . However in 1286 Meinhard, Duke of Carinthia Meinhard II of Gorizia Tyrol became Duke of Carinthia as recompensation for supporting King Rudolph against Ottokar and also retained Carniola and the Windic March as a fief. Deviating from these decisions the RheinfeldenTreaty set down the primogeniture order then eleven year old Duke Rudolph II had to waive all his rights to the thrones of Austria and Styria to the benefit of his elder brother Albert I. According to the terms of the agreement, Rudolf should receive some territories in Further Austria in return but was never compensated until his death in 1290. He died as a result of battle wounds as his faction met Henrys and defeated him in the Battle of Elster . In 1057 Rudolf allegedly took advantage of the minority of Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV , King of the Romans , by kidnapping Matilda, the king s sister. Rudolf demanded, and received, Matilda s hand in marriage 1059 , as well as the Duchy of Swabia and administration of the Kingdom of Kingdom of Arles Burgundy . In 1060 Matilda died, and Rudolf subsequently, in 1066, married Adelheid, daughter of Otto of Savoy . Rudolf, who was brother in law to Henry IV twice over, at first supported the king s campaigns. He aided him in Thuringia and Duchy of Saxony Saxony and was a primary force in the First Battle of Langensalza against the rebels. However, when the Investiture Controversy broke out and Henry was excommunicated, Rudolf met with several other nobles to decide on a course of action.
