No footnotes date September 2010 A tradestudy or trade off study is the activity of a multidisciplinary team to identify the most balanced technical solutions among a set of proposed viable solutions FAA 2006 . These viable solutions are judged by their satisfaction of a series of measures or cost functions. These measures describe the desirable characteristics of a solution. They may be conflicting or even mutually exclusive. Trade studies are commonly used in the design of aerospace and automotive vehicles and the software selection process Phillips et al. 2002 to find the configuration that best meets conflicting performance requirements. The measures are dependent on variables that characterize the different potential solutions. If the system can be characterized by a set of equations, we can write the definition of the tradestudy problem as Find the set of variables, xi that give the best overall satisfaction to the measures T1 f x1, x2, x3 .. T2 f x1, x2, x3 .. T3 f x1, x2, x3 .. TN f x1, x2, x3 .. Where Tj is a target value and f denotes some functional relationship among the variables. Further, the equality between the target and the function may be a richer relationship, as will be developed below. If the equations are linear, as in the production volume example used as a starting point below, then this problem is solvable using linear programming techniques. Generally, one or more of the targets is not fixed at a specific value and it is desired to make these T values as large or small as possible. An Event study is a statistics statistical method to assess the impact of an event on the value of a firm. For example, the announcement of a merger between two business entities can be analyzed to see whether investors believe the merger will create or destroy value. The basic idea is to find the abnormal return attributable to the event being studied by adjusting for the return that stems from the price fluctuation of the market as a whole. ref Ronald J. Gilson and Bernard S. Black, The Law and Finance of Corporate Acquisitions, 2 edition, 1995, 194 195. ref Event studies have been used in a large variety of studies, including mergers and acquisitions, earnings announcements, debt or Stock equity issues, corporate reorganisations, investment decisions and corporate social responsibility MacKinlay 1997 McWilliams & Siegel, 1997 . Motivation The logic behind the event study methodology within the specific context of merger s is explained in Warren Boulton and Dalkir 2001 Investors in financial markets bet their dollars on whether a merger will raise or lower prices. A merger that raises market prices will benefit both the merging parties and their rivals and thus raise the prices for all their shares. Conversely, the financial community may expect the efficiencies from the merger to be sufficiently large to drive down prices. In this case, the share values of the merging firms rivals fall as the probability of the merger goes up. Thus, evidence from financial markets can be used ... The Grant Study is a 68 year longitudinal study of two socially different cohorts 237 physically and mentally healthy Harvard college sophomores from the classes of 1939 1944, and a second cohort of 332 disadvantaged non delinquent inner city youths who grew up in Boston neighborhoods between 1940 and 1945. ref Vaillant, G. The men were followed for 68 years until they reached the ages of 70 years for the inner city group and 80 years for the Harvard cohort. The study, its methodology and results are described in two books by a principal investigator in the sudy, George Valliant. The first book ref Valliant, George E. unreferenced date February 2008 globalize USA date December 2010 Study hall or study period is a term for a place and or time during the school day where students are assigned to study when they are not scheduled for an academic class. They are most commonly found in high schools and some middle schools, especially in the United States . In colleges, such a place may be called a student lounge . Study halls generally have assigned rooms and are monitored by teacher s or teacher s aides, who often encourage students to use this time to complete homework , catch up on missing assignments, or study for tests or quizzes. Sometimes, students also use study halls to converse, make phone calls, text message, play video games, or otherwise socialize or pursue non academic topics, though this is sometimes discouraged or forbidden. Periods in which such things are allowed are occasionally differentiated from study halls by the name free period . Some students even eat lunch during a study hall due to long lines and short lunch periods at their schools. Study halls are often used by students to visit with teachers, who have a prep period , in order to discuss work or assignments. A study hall can be a period to utilize school resources or otherwise request teacher assistance in any subject not understood by the student. Many academics who date July 2010 feel that study hall is an inefficient allocation of time which is often underutilized, but others say it is a positive addition to a regular schedule because it creates a good environment for completing homework.
