  1. Kelly tool

Not to be confused with K tool . The Kelly tool is a tool used in fire and rescue service for forcible entry and other prying and striking tasks. The predecessor of the Halligan bar , it has largely been superseded by the latter, but still sees some use. The kelly tool is named after its designer, Captain John F. Kelly of H&L Company 163 FDNY . It consists of a straight steel bar, generally about 28  inches long. One end is formed into a chisel the opposite end has an adze blade. The primary advantage over the claw tool it replaced is that the striking end the adze is in a straight line with the rest of the tool on the claw tool the corresponding end was curved into a hook with no flat surfaces. The kelly tool was intended specifically for opening doors and other barriers. Modern versions often are modified along the lines of the Halligan bar, especially at the chisel end. Originally the chisel blade was flat and straight more recently it has tended to take on a curved and forked form, similar to the claw of a carpenter s hammer . There are similar tools referred to generically as kelly tools , but in general they are variations on the original form. 1. K-tool

Unreferenced date December 2007 Image K Tool.JPG thumb right 300px K Tool The K tool is a tool used by many fire department s for forcible entry . It is used in conjunction with a Halligan bar and a flat headed axe or maul commonly referred to as irons or with a maul instead of an axe strong irons to remove a cylinder lock . It consists of a steel block roughly 3 inches by 3 inches by 1 inch thick with a K shaped notch on one side, having sharp edges that grip the cylinder, and a U shaped flange on the other side. The notch is slipped over the lock cylinder, then forced down by striking with the flat side of the axe or maul. The halligan is then inserted into the flange and used to pry the K tool off the door, thereby pulling the entire key cylinder out. The bolt is then retracted from the inside of the cylinder hole using a turning tool, such as a screwdriver. Some cylinder locks include additional shields outside and internally that will make this type of entry more difficult and time consuming, and there may be additional non cylinder locks to deal with. The K tool can be used on most styles of door, although it is often faster to use the File The Irons.JPG irons combination of an axe and halligan tool or a hydraulic ram on a solid door. The benefit of a K tool comes where it is impractical or dangerous to break the door, for example, the large plate glass doors in front of a commercial building will quickly yield to a well placed blow from an axe, but may send fragments of glass flying, and will result in a pile of broken glass. The K tool can be used to pull the core from the lock without damaging the door itself. The K tool is also useful during investigations where no fire is readily evident. The core can be pulled from a lock, which can often be repaired at lower cost than replacing a door and jamb damaged by other, more energetic entry methods. Advantages and disadvantages The advantage of tipped tools is only a small insert of the cutting material is needed to provide the cutting ability. The small size makes manufacturing of the insert easier than making a solid tool of the same material. This also reduces cost because the tool holder can be made of a less expensive and toughness tougher material. In some situations a tipped tool is better than its solid counterpart because it combines the toughness of the tool holder with the hardness of the insert. ref name stephenson In other situations this is less than optimal, because the joint between the tool holder and the insert reduces rigidity. ref name stephenson However, these tools may still be used because the overall cost savings is still greater. 1. Chain tool

Refimprove date July 2010 Infobox tool name Chain tool image caption A bicycle chain tool other name classification Bicycle tools types used with inventor manufacturer model related A chain tool is a small mechanical device used to break a bicycle chain in such a way that it can be mended with the same tool. A bicycle chain has links and plates that are pinned together these pins can be pushed partway out with the chain tool. The chain tool has two positions where a chain can be inserted perpendicular to the tool, one close to the movable screw portion, and one lower down just above the fixed end. In each position, there are a pair of protruding tabs one fits into the center of one link of the chain, the other fits into the center of the next link. With the chain properly in place, the pin is held in the center of the tool, so that the tip of the movable screw can press on the end of the pin. The end of the screw is slightly narrower than the pin, so that it can press the pin through the link. Often the end of the screw is a removable piece which can be replaced when worn. Variations and alternatives Most chain tools are designed for chains where the links have flat plates. For chains with complicated shaped plates designed to facilitate smooth shifting, specific chain tools are available which are identical in design and operation, but have the ears protruding into the chain shaped in cross section to fit the links of the particular chain in question precisely, so as to hold the pin in the all important vertical alignment with the screw of the tool. While a chain tool is required for removal and installation of some types of chains on a bicycle, other chains can be broken without a chaintool. nofootnotes date July 2009 refimprove date July 2009 File Mcleod tool.jpg thumb 150px right This combination heavy duty rake and hoe tool is named after Ranger Malcolm McLeod. Firefighters use this tool to cut through matted litter and duff and clearing loose surface materials. The McLeod is a wildland firefighting tool with a large hoe like blade on one side and tined blade on the other. It is commonly used in the mountains of the American west . This tool is called a Rake Hoe in Australia and a Streif in the American southwest . It was originally intended for raking fire lines with the teeth and for cutting branches and sod with the sharpened hoe edge. The McLeod is useful for removing slough and berm from a trail and tamping or compacting tread. It can also be used to shape a trail s backslope. Because of its shape, the McLeod is an awkward tool to transport and store. Ideally it is carried with the tines pointing toward the ground for safety, with a sheath over the cutting edge. However, the mass distribution makes it difficult to carry in this orientation consistently.
