Career Browne was born in Woodstock, County Mayo , sent to relatives on Antigua in 1737 and returned to Europe due to ill health after two years. He studied medicine, natural history and especially botany at Reims , Paris and Leyden , qualifying in 1743. He worked as a physician at St. Thomas s Hospital , London, visited Barbados , Montserrat , Antigua and St. Kitts in the West Indies and settled as physician in Jamaica in 1746. He corresponded with the botanist Carl Linnaeus , among whose papers were found fragments of articles on venereal diseases and yaws by Browne. His major work, The Civil and Natural History of Jamaica 1756 , illustrated by the botanic artist Georg Dionysius Ehret contains new names for 104 genera . Edward Harold Browne 1811 18 December 1891 usually known as Harold Browne was a Bishop of the Church of England . The second son of Col. Robert Browne of Morton House , in Buckinghamshire , and of Sarah Dorothea Steward, he was educated at Eton College Eton and Emmanuel College, Cambridge . ref Venn id BRWN827EH name Browne, Edward Harold ref After securing his Bachelor of Arts B.A. in 1832, he won the Crosse theological scholarship in 1833, the Tyrwhitt Hebrew scholarship in 1834, and the Norrisian prize in 1835. In 1854 he was elected Norris Hulse Professor of Divinity Norrisian Professor of Divinity at Cambridge. He took the Bachelor of Divinity B.D. in 1855 and the Doctor of Divinity D.D. in 1864. He was ordain ed deacon in 1837 and priest in the following year.
