    George Thomas Barnes August 14, 1833 October 24, 1901 was a Georgia U.S. state Georgia state legislator, military officer, and United States House of Representatives United States Representative . Biography Barnes was born in the Summerville suburb of Augusta, Georgia . He graduated from the University of Georgia UGA in Athens, Georgia Athens in 1855 with a Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Arts A.B. degree. He was admitted to the state bar in 1855 and became a practicing lawyer in Augusta. During the American Civil War , Barnes served as a second lieutenant and major brevet in the Confederate States Army as a member of the Washington Light Artillery Company. He was also a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from 1860 through 1865. From 1876 through 1884, Barnes served on the Democratic National Committee . In 1884, Barnes was elected as a Democratic Party United States Democrat to the 49th United States Congress as the Representative for Georgia s 10th congressional district . He was re elected to that position for two additional terms before losing his bid for reelection in 1890. After his congressional service, Barnes returned to the practice of law. Barnes was a UGA trustee for the last two years of his life before dying in Augusta on October 24, 1901. He was buried in City Cemetery in that same city.     Thomas Barnes 1747 1810 was an English Unitarianism Unitarian minister and educational reformer. Life He was the son of William Barnes, of Warrington . His mother was Elizabeth, daughter of the Rev. Thomas Blinston, of Wigan . He was born on 13 February 1747, and he lost his father when he was in his third year. He received his elementary education at Warrington grammar school, and later in the Warrington Academy . He was subsequently licensed as a preacher of the gospel, and became minister of the congregation at Cockey Moor Ainsworth, near Bolton in 1768. He remained there for eleven years. When he left, the numbers in attendance had trebled. In 1780 he became the minister of Cross Street chapel at Manchester. It was at the time the largest, wealthiest, and most influential congregation of Dissenters in the town and district, and he remained there for thirty years until his death.     Thomas Baines 1806 1881 , was an English journalist and local historian . Baines was born at Leeds in 1806, the third son of the late Edward Baines , M.P. In 1829 he settled in Liverpool as editor of the Liverpool Times newspaper, and for thirty years was an active promoter of liberal interests in Lancashire . In 1852 he published a valuable history of the commerce and town of Liverpool, and in 1867 Lancashire and Cheshire Past and Present, having in 1859 settled in London at the Liverpool Office as a parliamentary agent. His last work, Yorkshire Past and Present, was published in 1875 and on 31 Oct. 1881, he died at his residence, Seaforth Hall , near Liverpool. Two minor books of his were Agricultural Resources of Great Britain and the Colonies, and Observations on the River Plate. His county histories are characterised by fulness of details, clearness of statement, and orderly arrangement. Becoming editor of the Bolton Free Press , he at an early period of his life took an active part in advocating social and political reforms.
