  1. Vienna Series in Theoretical Biology

The Vienna Series in Theoretical Biology is a book series published by MIT Press and devoted to advances in theoretical biology at large. By promoting the formulation and discussion of new theoretical concept concepts , the series intends to help fill the gaps in our understanding of some of the major open questions of biology , such as the origin and organization of organismal form, the relationship between Evolutionary developmental biology development and evolution , and the biological bases of cognition and mind . The Vienna Series grew out of the Altenberg Workshops in Theoretical Biology organized by the Konrad Lorenz Institute for Evolution and Cognition Research KLI , an international center for advanced study in Altenberg, near Vienna , Austria . The KLI fosters research projects, workshops, archives, book projects, and the journal Biological Theory , all devoted to aspects of theoretical biology, with an emphasis on integrating the developmental, evolutionary, and cognitive sciences. The tradition pursued in universities and scientific journals under the rubric of theoretical ecology addresses the equations and probability distribution s that govern the demography and biogeography of species . Common topics of theoretical ecology include population dynamics and especially the mathematics of food webs , and biological competition competition . To a large extent theoretical ecology draws on the work of G. Evelyn Hutchinson and his students. Brothers Howard Odum H.T. Odum and Eugene Odum E.P. Odum are seen as the true founders of modern theoretical ecology sometimes described as ecosystem ecology . Robert MacArthur brought theory to community ecology . Daniel Simberloff was the student of E.O. Wilson , with whom MacArthur collaborated on The Theory of Island Biogeography , a seminal work in the development of theoretical ecology. 1. Theoretical neuromorphology

Orphan date February 2009 Refimprove date July 2007 Theoretical neuromorphology is the science of using Morphology biology morphology to mathematically describe the shape and the connectivity in the nervous system . History The rational study of shapes as been long to form. In the major progresses made during the last century, it is important to differentiate morphogenesis the way forms are made and morphology realized forms . Morphogenesis Important conceptual changes about forms came from d Arcy Thompson s essay 1917 dealing with forms in nature. These were not considered as static but as the result of morphogenetic factors. Not knowable in its intimate nature, form is defined as the simple result of forces. Ren Thom Thom 1974 , founder of the catastrophe theory acknowledged what he owed to this work. A series of various branches of non linear mathematics catastrophe theory , the fractal theory , the theory of dissipative structures , the chaos theory have led to what Boutot 1993 called the morphologic revolution , which has deeply modified the conception of forms in space. 1. Theoretical philosophy

The division of philosophy into a practical philosophy practical and a theoretical discipline has its origin in Aristotle s moral philosophy and natural philosophy categories. In Sweden , Denmark and Finland courses in theoretical and practical philosophy are taught separately, and are separate degrees. Other countries may use a similar scheme some Scotland Scottish universities, for example, divide philosophy into logic , metaphysics , and ethics but in most universities around the world philosophy is taught as a single subject. There is also a unified philosophy subject in some Swedish universities, such as S dert rn University College S dert rns H gskola . Theoretical philosophy is sometimes confused with Analytic philosophy , but the latter is a philosophical movement, embracing certain ideas and methods but dealing with all philosophical subject matters, while the former is a way of sorting philosophical questions into two different categories in the context of a curriculum . 1. Theoretical sampling

Theoretical sampling refers to the process of choosing new research sites or cases to compare with ones that have already been studied. It is one of the tools of qualitative research . The term was coined by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss in 1967. The goal of theoretical sampling is not the same as with the sampling statistics probabilistic sampling the researcher s goal is not the representative capture of all possible variations, but to gain a deeper understanding of analysed cases and facilitate the development of analytic frame and concept s used in their research. Theoretical sampling can be viewed as a technique of data triangulation using independent pieces of information to get a better fix on something that is only partially known or understood. For the journal Theoretical Linguistics journal Theoretical linguistics is the branch of linguistics that is most concerned with developing models of linguistic knowledge. The fields that are generally considered the core of theoretical linguistics are syntax , phonology , morphology linguistics morphology , and semantics . Although phonetics often informs phonology, it is often excluded from the purview of theoretical linguistics, along with psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics . Theoretical linguistics also involves the search for an explanation of linguistic universal s, that is, properties all language s have in common. 1. Perturbation (biology)

Mergeto Disturbance ecology date May 2009 A perturbation of a biological system is an alteration of function, induced by external or internal mechanisms. Biological systems can be perturbed through a number of means. Examples include Environmental stimuli temperature changes, osmotic shock , pressure changes Small molecules that affect different biological pathways drugs, toxins Manipulation of gene function, such as gene knockout or transcript knockdown by RNA interference Motor movements when they encounter external disruptions, such a leg stepping into a hole References Unreferenced date December 2006 biology stub Category Mathematical and theoretical biology Category Biological systems ...   more details

  1. Computational biology

Computational biology involves the development and application of data analytical and theoretical methods, mathematical modeling and computational simulation techniques to the study of biological, behavioral, and social systems. ref name nih http www.bisti.nih.gov docs compubiodef.pdf ref The field is widely defined and includes foundations in computer science , applied mathematics , statistics , biochemistry , molecular biology , genetics , ecology , evolution , anatomy , neuroscience , and scientific visualization visualization . ref http www.brown.edu Research CCMB undergraduate.htm ref Subfields Computational biomodeling main Modelling biological systems Computational biomodeling, a field concerned with building computer model s of biological systems. Computational genomics main Computational genomics Computational genomics, a field within genomics which studies the genome s of cells and organisms. High throughput genome sequencing produces lots of data, which requires extensive post processing genome assembly and uses DNA microarray technologies to perform statistical analyses on the genes expressed in individual cell types. This can help find genes of interest for certain diseases or conditions. This field also studies the DNA sequencing theory mathematical foundations of sequencing .... Computational biology vs. Bioinformatics main Bioinformatics Bioinformatics and computational biology ..., computer science and engineering, biology, and behavioral science. Bioinformatics and computational biology each maintain close interactions with life sciences to realize their full potential. Bioinformatics ... life sciences data more understandable and useful. Computational biology uses mathematical and computational approaches to address theoretical and experimental questions in biology. Although bioinformatics and computational biology are distinct, there is also significant overlap and activity ... simulation Mathematical biology Molecular modeling Structural genomics Systems biology References ...   more details
