Unreferenced date February 2009 Outpost Snipe was the location of a famous World War II Second World War defensive action during the desert campaign in Egypt . The defense of Outpost Snipe took place during the Second Battle of El Alamein . It is particularly noteworthy due to the tenacity of the troops involved and is an excellent example of a last stand . On the 27th October 1942, the 2nd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade Prince Consort s Own Rifle Brigade with support troops including 19 Ordnance QF 6 pounder 6 pounder anti tank gun s was ordered to take possession of a desert feature known as Snipe a small depression in the otherwise featureless landscape suitable for setting up a defensible base. Once completed this point would be used to launch a further advance by a larger body of troops the 24th Armoured Brigade . The initial advance took the battalion to what they thought was the feature Snipe . It was, in fact, a similar depression some 900 yards south of the intended target. Having established a base, scouts were sent out who discovered that a large group of mixed Italy Italian and Germany German tanks and infantry had laager ed nearby. In fact, the Battalion were in the middle of a number of enemy armoured formations. Isolated firefights and skirmishes continued through the night. Early the next day two tank columns passed Outpost Snipe apparently unaware of the force that lay hidden there. The troops opened fire with their 6 pounder anti tank guns, aiming at the thin side armour of the tanks, destroying 16 tanks with no loss. An Outpost of Progress is a short story written in July 1896 by Joseph Conrad , drawing on his own experience at Congo. It was published in the magazine Cosmopolis A Literary Review Cosmopolis in 1897 and was later collected in Tales of Unrest in 1898. Often compared with Heart of Darkness , Conrad considered it his best tale, owing to its scrupulousness of tone and severity of discipline . Plot summary The story revolves around two Belgian agents, named Kayerts and Carlier, who are assigned to a trading post in a remote part of the African Jungle. There they take part in ivory trade ivory trading , hoping to financially benefit the company as well as themselves. With no specific tasks or important things to be done, they both become increasingly isolated and demoralized as the time goes by. At one point in the story, the native Makola, serving as Kayerts s and Carlier s bookkeeper, initiates an exchange of slaves for ivory trade ivory . Initially Kayerts and Carlier are stunned and scandalized by the idea, yet eventually they accept the deal and aid Makola for his huge profit.
