- The Canadas
Unreferenced date December 2009 Image Canada upper lower map.PNG thumb The Canadas, upper orange and lower green The Canadas is the collective name for Upper Canada and Lower Canada , two British colonization of the Americas British colonies in Canada . They were both created by the Constitutional Act of 1791 and abolished in 1841 with the union of Upper and Lower Canada . Their names reflected their positions relative to the headwaters of the St. Lawrence River , the same relationship between Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt Lower Canada covered the south eastern portion of the modern day Province of Quebec , Canada, and until 1809 the Labrador region of the modern day Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Upper Canada covered what is now the southern portion of the Province of Ontario in Canada, and the lands bordering Georgian Bay and Lake Superior . The northern part of the current provinces of Ontario and Quebec were at this time part of Rupert s Land . History The British colony of the Province of Quebec 1763 1791 Province of Quebec was divided by the Constitutional Act of 1791 into two separate provinces, with the Ottawa River forming a part of the border. The creation of Upper Canada was in response to the desire expressed by recently arrived United Empire Loyalist settlers for British institutions and laws, especially British laws of land tenure. The political structure of the colonies was changed after John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham Lord Durham s 1838 Report on the Affairs of British North America recommended they be merged into a single colonial province. Lower Canada, Upper Canada and their legislatures were abolished by the British Act of Union 1840 of July 23, 1840 which came into force in early 1841 and united as one political entity, the Province of Canada . The previous collapse after only a coalition government formed by George tienne Cartier and Conservative Party of Canada historical Conservative John A. Macdonald the sixth government in six years had demonstrated that continued governance of Canada East and Canada West under the 1840 Act of Union 1840 Act of Union had become untenable. In order to reform the political system, a coalition was formed between the Clear Grits under George Brown Canadian politician George Brown , the Parti bleu under George tienne Cartier, and the Liberal Conservatives under John A. Macdonald. The formation of this coalition on 1 June 1863 under George tienne Cartier and John A. Macdonald, as the colonies of the Canadas led directly to Canadian Confederation in 1867. The Great Coalition was formed to stop the political deadlock between Canada East and Canada West. The government at that time was unable to pass anything because of the need for a double majority . In order for a bill to pass in the Legislative Assembly , there had to be a vote in both Canada East and Canada West sections of the assembly. The French and the English could never agree on anything, this caused the political deadlock. The deadlock lead to the three conferences that lead to confederation. The Charlottetown Conference , where the politicians were supposed to discuss the idea of a Maritime union. They chose to talk about the colony of Canada, and took the opportunity to disscuss the possibility of a larger union that would include all of British North America . The Quebec Conference was to further discuss the union of British North America and to define the details of what shape that government would take. They settled on Provincial and Federal responsibili ... more details
