ISDN In ISDN terminology, a terminaladapter or TA is a device that connects a terminal computer to the ISDN network. The TA therefore fulfills a similar function to the ones a modem has on the Plain old telephone service POTS network, and is therefore sometimes called an ISDN modem . The latter term, however, is partially misleading as there is no modulation or demodulation performed. There are devices on the market that combine the functions of an ISDN TA with those of a classical modem with an ISDN line interface . These combined TA modems permit connections from both ISDN and analog line modem counterparts. In addition, a TA may contain an interface and codec for one or more analog telephone lines aka a b line , allowing an existing POTS installation to be upgraded to ISDN without changing phones. Terminal adapters typically connect to a basic rate interface S interface S0 , sometimes also U interface U0 . On the terminal side, the most popular interfaces are RS 232 serial and USB others like V.35 or RS 449 are only of historical interest. Devices connecting ISDN to a network e.g. Ethernet commonly include router routing functionality while they technically include a TA function, they are referred to as ISDN router s. Mobile Networks In Mobile network s, the terminaladapter is used by the Terminal equipment to access the Mobile termination , using AT commands see Hayes command set . In 2G such as GSM or CDMA , the terminaladapter is a theoretically optional while in 3G such as W CDMA , the terminaladapter is mandatory and is part of the Mobile Termination . Automation industry In the automation industry, a terminaladapter is a passive device that converts a connector like the 8P8C RJ 45 modular connector or DE 9 connector 9 pin D Sub into a terminal block to facilitate wiring. It is often used when daisy chain wiring is necessary on a multi node serial communication network like RS 485 or RS 422 . The console originally came equipped with a 56 or 33.6K modem for use with dial up Internet access but the release of the broadband adapter on January 10, 2001 allowed the Dreamcast to utilize broadband Internet access . The device can be used for web browsing, gaming and all of the other functions accessible using dial up access. Shortly after its release, the adapter also became one of the items used to copy Dreamcast GD ROM s, much faster than was previously possible. Versions It is a common misconception that the broadband adapter was released with two model numbers HIT 0400 for US, and HIT 0401 for Japan . This is actually a misunderstanding as all broadband adaptors from Japan or the US have the code HIT 0400. The code HIT 0401 actually refers to the Japanese broadband adapters packaging and documentation, and the code HIT 0400 refers to the adapter hardware itself. An ATA usually takes the form of a small box with a power adapter, one Ethernet port, one or more Foreign exchange station FXS telephone ports and may also have a Foreign exchange office FXO link. Users can plug one or more standard analog telephone devices into the ATA and the analog device s will operate, usually transparently, on a Voice over IP VoIP network. The most common ATA is a box with at least one Foreign eXchange Station which includes a telephone jack , used to connect a conventional telephone, and an Ethernet jack used to connect the adapter to a LAN . Using such an ATA, it is possible to connect a conventional telephone to a remote VoIP server. The ATA communicates with the server using a protocol such as H.323 , Session Initiation Protocol SIP , MGCP , Skinny Client Control Protocol SCCP or Inter Asterisk eXchange IAX , and encodes and decodes the voice signal using a voice codec such as G.711 , G.729 , GSM , iLBC or others.
