Mauger of Hauteville also Latin Malgerius or Italian language Italian Maugerio was a younger probably the second son of Tancred of Hauteville by his second wife, Fressenda. He travelled to the Mezzogiorno with his brother William of the Principate William and his elder half brother Geoffrey of Hauteville Geoffrey around 1053, though some sources indicate him coming later, c.1056. He soon distinguished himself and was invested with the county of the Capitanate soon after his arrival either 1053 or 1057 by Humphrey of Hauteville Humphrey , his half brother and count of Apulia , but he did not long survive to hold it. According to Goffredo Malaterra , he died in 1054, though other chroniclers have him dying in 1057 or as late as 1060, after assisting his elder full brother Robert Guiscard , Humphrey s successor, in an expedition against the new army of the Byzantine Emperor Constantine X , sent to recover Langobardia Theme Langobardia . Whenever he died, his fief went to William, who passed it to Geoffrey out of fraternal affection according to Malaterra . Sources Chalandon, Ferdinand. Geoffrey of Hauteville also Gottfried , Godfrey , Goffredo , or Gaufrido was a Normans Norman military leader, the second youngest son of Tancred of Hauteville by his first wife Muriella. He joined his brothers in the Mezzogiorno around 1053, arriving with his half brothers Mauger of Hauteville Mauger and William of the Principate William . He was certainly present at the Battle of Civitate in that year. In that year, Humphrey of Hauteville Humphrey , his brother the count of Apulia , gave Mauger and William the Capitanate and the Principate , respectively, with the title of count. When Mauger died later that decade in 1054, according to Goffredo Malaterra , the county passed to William, who gave it to Geoffrey. In 1059, his brother Robert Guiscard , Humphrey s successor over Geoffrey, who was older, but had not been in the south as long, helped him quell a revolt in the Capitanate. He also ruled the region around Loritello , where his son Robert I of Loritello Robert was invested as count, and he expanded his domains into those of the pope, conquering Gissi in the Abruzzi . His death is a matter of confusion. The Breve Chronicon Northmannicum states, on the authority of Goffredo Malaterra , that he died in 1063, but the chronicler apparently confused the many Geoffreys of the period. He probably died circa 1071. He had been married in Normandy and he had three sons from that union the aforementioned Robert Ralph of Catanzaro Ralph , who inherited Catanzaro and William of Tiriolo William , who inherited Tiriolo . In the Mezzogiorno, he married, like his eldest brother William Iron Arm , a niece of the Prince Guaimar IV of Salerno , Theodora of Capaccio, daughter of Pandulf, lord of Capaccio , Guaimar s brother. Tancred of Conversano , the youngest son of Geoffrey, Count of Conversano , became the count of Brindisi on his father s death sometime after 1085 . Tancred s elder brother Alexander, Count of Conversano Alexander succeeded their father as count of Conversano . In 1121, Count Roger II of Sicily invaded the Basilicata to annex the county of Montescaglioso which had formerly been held by his sister Emma in right of her deceased husband Rudolf Maccabeus . In April, Tancred assisted Duke William II of Apulia and Prince Bohemund II of Antioch Bohemond II of Taranto and Antioch in conquering the castle of Basento , within the county of Montescaglioso claimed of Roger. With the help of Pope Callistus II , a treaty, however, ended hostilities between the descendants of Tancred of Hauteville . Tancred was recognised as count of Brindisi. Tancred became part of a grand alliance of rebels, including Robert II of Capua , Ranulf II of Alife , Grimoald of Bari , Geoffrey of Andria , and Roger of Ariano . In the spring of 1129, Roger entered the peninsula with a great army to claim Apulia after William s death 1127 . Many of the princes came to heel, but in the summer of 1131, when Roger left, Grimoald and Tancred revolted immediately and took the port of Brindisi and held it against Roger. In May 1132, Grimoald was taken captive and Tancred was only spared by a promise to leave on crusade . He gave up Brindisi for twenty gold coins. Herman of Hauteville Ermanno in Italian language Italian c. 1045 1097 was the younger son of Humphrey of Hauteville Humphrey , Count of Apulia count of Apulia and Calabria 1051 1057 , and his Lombards Lombard wife, Gaitelgrima of Salerno, also known as Altrude. His older brother Abelard of Hauteville Abelard was supposed to inherit their father s lands, but Robert Guiscard , their uncle, who was elected count on Humphrey s death, confiscated them. In 1064, Abelard was at the head of a revolt of the barons against the Guiscard. Robert put it down, but Herman was given as a hostage to the Greece Greek catepan of Italy , Apochara , to ensure Abelard s continued loyalty. Upon his release, he went to Trani and held it during the revolt of 1071, when he lent his assistance to the rebels including Abelard . In 1073, he was finally captured, by Guy, Duke of Sorrento , the constant ally of the Normans Norman leadership in the Mezzogiorno . He was first imprisoned in Rapolla at Melfi and then taken to Mileto , then under Roger I of Sicily Roger , Robert s brother. Eventually released, he travelled far away, to Constantinople . During Guiscard s Byzantine Empire Byzantine expedition of 1081 1082, he returned to the peninsula and took Cannae , which he held as count for over a decade before joining Bohemond I of Antioch Bohemond , Robert s disinherited eldest son, on the First Crusade , where he was present at and died during the Siege of Antioch .
