A statistician is someone who works with theoretical or applied statistics . The profession exists in both the private and public sector s. The core of that work is to measure, interpret, and describe the world and human activity patterns within it. The field shares much common history with positivist social science , but often with a greater emphasis on advanced mathematical methods. It is common to combine statistical knowledge with expertise in other subjects. The applications are varied. Statisticians apply their knowledge to production, research, finance, medicine , the Built Environment built and Natural Environment natural environments , insurance and government . They often are employed to support managerial decisions or to supervise quality control in manufacturing. In basketball , a basketball statistician is an official responsible for recording statistics during games, and providing reports to coaches, league officials, and depending on the competition media and spectators. In organized competition and at professional level, games may have a panel of one or more statisticians in attendance. The statistician s role is to record the game and provide a report commonly known as a boxscore during breaks between periods, and at the completion of each game. Anthony John Fox born 25 April 1946 is a UK British statistician , who has worked in both the public service and academia. He was born on 25 April 1946, the son of Fred Frank Fox Order of the British Empire OBE . He was educated at Dauntsey s School , University College London BSc and Imperial College London PhD . He was a statistician at the Employment Medical Advisory Service , 1970 5 and then the Medical Statistics Division of the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys OPCS until 1979. In the latter job, he helped to set up the England and Wales Longitudinal Survey , which monitors the health, address changes and fertility of a 1 sample of the population of England and Wales over time for statistical purposes. During 1980 8, he was Professor of Social Statistics at City University London City University , building up his department into one of the world s leading centres for social statistics. He returned to OPCS in 1988 as the United Kingdom Chief Medical Statistician. In 1990, he took on the additional post of honorary professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine . In 1996, following the creation of the Office for National Statistics ONS into which OPCS was incorporated , cuts in the senior Civil Service meant that his responsibilities were widened to include demographic statistics and he became Director of the Census, Population and Health Group there. In 1999, he moved to the British Department of Health Department of Health as Director of Statistics. William Gordon Hunter , or Bill Hunter as he was usually called, was a statistician at the University of Wisconsin Madison . He was co author of the classic book Statistics for Experimenters , and founder of the Center for Quality and Productivity Improvement . Hunter was born March 27, 1937 in Buffalo, New York . He received a bachelor s degree from Princeton University Princeton in 1959 and in 1960 a Master s degree master s from the University of Illinois . He then became the first doctoral student at the new department of statistics at the University of Wisconsin Madison with George Box . He contributed to the book Statistics for Experimenters by George Box Box , William Hunter, and Stuart Hunter no relation to William Hunter . He founded the Statistics Division of the American Society for Quality and the Center for Quality and Productivity Improvement in Madison, Wisconsin . The American Statistical Association gives an annual award called the William G. Hunter Award. According to Box, He wanted to make a difference in the lives of less fortunate people, and he and his family spent extended periods of time helping third world countries. David Tim Holt Order of the Bath CB born 29 October 1943 is a United Kingdom British statistician who is Professor Emeritus of Social Statistics at the University of Southampton . He was formerly the president of the Royal Statistical Society 2005 07 , the last director of the Central Statistical Office, UK Central Statistical Office of the United Kingdom, and the first director of the Office for National Statistics and ex officio Registrar General . Background Tim Holt took a maths degree and a PhD in statistics at University of Exeter Exeter . Throughout his career, his main interests have been survey methods, sampling theory and official statistics. He took a particular interest, through his membership of the Royal Statistical Society , in the independence of national statistics from government. He was awarded the CB in 2000. Career His first job was with Statistics Canada , the national statistics office of Canada , where he spent four years before joining the Department of Social Statistics at the University of Southampton in 1980. He was Leverhulme Professor of Social Statistics from 1980 to 1995 and Deputy Vice Chancellor from 1990 1995.
