  1. Finnish Ladoga Naval Detachment

Finnish Ladoga Naval Detachment lang fi Laatokan laivasto osasto was a Finnish naval unit located at the Lake Ladoga between 1920 1944. Background The Treaty of Tartu Russian Finnish Treaty of Tartu was signed by the Russians and the Finns in 1920. The treaty included a paragraph, which limited the size of naval vessels on Ladoga to 100 tons, and the calibre of the armament to a maximum of 47 mm. When the Finns embarked on their naval rebuilding program in the early 1930s, some vessels were purposely designed to fit this 100 t limitation, including Finnish submarine Saukko a small submarine . However, the Finns found more use of their few vessels in the Baltic Sea and therefore they had only a few small patrol boats in the lake. As the clouds of war began to draw closer the Finns had to improvise. Winter War The Winter War began on 30 November 1939 when the Soviet Union attacked Finland . The Treaty of Tartu was no longer in power. The Finns hastily gathered a small flotilla, consisting of the icebreaker Aallokas , the improvised gunboats Finnish gunboat Aunus Aunus , Finnish gunboat Vulcan Vulcan and Finnish gunboat Tarmo Tarmo , as well as Hercules , Kiviniemi , Yrj , Voima , S I, N K af Klecker and a number of transport vessels to protect its sea front and islands. The largest ship among this group was the icebreaker Aallokas , whose commander Captain Lieutenant Asikainen also commanded the gunboats. There were no major naval battles in the open waters of Lake Ladoga during 1939 1940, so the fleet units were tasked with fire support against the attacking Red Army, and spreading mines along the coastal areas. By January 1940 the ice became so thick that only Aallokas could be used, and she was also damaged in an attack by Soviet aircraft on February 2. After the Moscow Peace Treaty peace on March 13 the Finnish vessels had to be left at Lake Ladoga, who had become a Soviet lake in its entity. Some of the vessels were later integrated in the Soviet Ladoga flotilla ...   more details

  1. Novyye Duboviki

Novyye Duboviki lang ru literally New Oak Grove is an archaeological site in Leningrad Oblast of Russia , located about km to mi 9 south of Staraya Ladoga Ladoga upstream the Volkhov River , at the head of the lower Volkhov rapids. In the Early Middle Ages , Novyye Duboviki was the site of a Norse Slavic fort, which guarded the crossing of the rapids. The settlement flourished in the late 9th century, but was burned to the ground in the early 10th century. It was later revived on a much smaller scale, and was operated by the Novgorod Republic in the High Middle Ages , as a minor pogost . Although the site is seriously damaged by modern building activities, a series of excavations, undertaken since 1884, revealed traces of a predominantly Scandinavian settlement, covering no less than six hectares. The fort was ringed by at least ten burial mounds, ranging from seven to ten meters in height. The tallest barrow, built around a 9 meter high vertical pole, stands m to ft 10.5 high. Recent research established Duboviki as key to understanding the earliest fortifications of Holmgard Novgorod . As Ladoga did not possess strong fortifications in the early medieval period, it was Duboviki that shielded Novgorod from potential attacks by the Norse raiders. The Varangian and later Slavic military stationed at Duboviki could effectively block the passage for pirate ships moving up the Volkhov towards Novgorod . Prior to the construction of the hydroelectric station, the shores of the river near Duboviki were craggy, exceeding twenty metres in height. As late as the 19th century, dozens of boats were shipwrecked while passing the rapids each year. Remains of another early medieval fort were detected at the head of the upper Volkhov rapids slightly downstream. As a result of this ingenious system of natural and man made defenses, medieval Novgorod was never susceptible to pirate attacks, unlike its principal rivals, such as Sigtuna , Ladoga, Mokhovoye Kaup , and ot ...   more details

  1. Eyjólfr dáđaskáld

Eyj lfr d ask ld poet of deeds was a skald active in the early 11th century. He was the court poet of Eir kr H konarson for whom he composed the Bandadr pa , his only known poem. Eight stanzas and a refrain are preserved of the Bandadr pa in the kings sagas , primarily Heimskringla , and in Sk ldskaparm l . The content of the poem is also summarized in Fagrskinna . The preserved parts of Bandadr pa relate Eir kr s early deeds his killing of Skopti, his becoming a Jarl title jarl at a young age, his raids in the Baltic and his attack on Staraya Ladoga Ladoga . Judging from the Fagrskinna summary the complete poem was much more extensive, going up to the battle of Sv ldr and beyond. It may have been composed around the year 1010. Apart from what can be surmised from his poetry nothing is known about Eyj lfr. He may have been an Icelander like most known skalds of the period. The refrain of the Bandadr pa celebrates Eir kr for conquering lands according to the will of the gods , a phrase borrowed from Einarr sk laglamm s Vellekla . This pagan reference in a poem about the ostensibly Christian Eir kr may suggest that the poet was himself a pagan. References Finlay, Alison editor and translator 2004 .
